A continuous casting apparatus includes a first belt carried by a first upstream pulley and a first downstream pulley, a second belt carried by a second upstream pulley and a second downstream pulley, and a mold region defined by a first mold support section arranged behind the first belt and a second mold support section arranged behind the second belt. The first mold support section supports the first belt and defines a shape of the first belt in the mold region and the second mold support section supports the second belt and defines a shape of the second belt in the mold region. At least one of the first mold support section and the second mold support section includes a transition portion and a generally planar portion downstream from the transition portion. The transition portion has a variable radius configured to receive molten metal from a metal feeding device.

System and method for continuous casting

A magnetic induction pump for pumping molten metal. The pump includes a motor and a shaft operatively connected to the motor. The pump further includes at least one bipolar permanent magnet operatively connected to the shaft and a conduit for the passage of molten metal. The motor rotates the shaft and magnet about the conduit inducing eddy currents in the molten metal in the conduit which react with the moving magnetic field to produce force to pump the metal through the conduit with the metal coming into contact with only an interior surface of the conduit.

Heating systems and methods for inductive heating or a combination of resistive and inductive heating. A heater coil is inductively coupled to an article and a current signal is supplied to the heater coil. The heater coil generates a magnetic flux, based on the applied current signal, for inductively heating the article. Current pulses of a certain profile are used to enhance the rate, intensity and/or power of inductive heating delivered by the heating element or coil and/or to enhance the lifetime or reduce the cost of the inductive heating system.

Inductive heating method utilizing high frequency harmonics and intermittent cooling

Method and apparatus for providing harmonic inductive power, and more particularly for delivering current pulses providing a desired amount of pulse energy in high frequency harmonics to a load circuit for inductive heating of an article. By controlling the shape and/or frequency of such current pulses, the apparatus and method can be used to enhance the rate, intensity and/or power of inductive heating delivered by the heater coil and/or to enhance the lifetime or reduce the cost and complexity of an inductive heating power supply. Of particular significance, the apparatus and method may be used to significantly increase the power inductively delivered to a ferromagnetic or other inductively heated load, without requiring an increase of current in the heater coil. This enables new heating applications, and in some known applications, decreases the energy consumption or cooling requirements and/or increase the lifetime of the heater coil.

Apparatus for delivering harmonic inductive power

Method for inductive heating of a material located in a channel, the material having a melting range between a solidus temperature and a liquidus temperature. The method includes providing an internal inductive heating assembly in the material in the channel, and supplying a signal to the assembly to generate a magnetic flux in at least one of the assembly and material. The magnetic flux generates inductive heating of the assembly and/or the material and a physical agitation which lowers the solidus temperature of the material to a reduced solidus temperature.

Apparatus and method for inductive heating wherein an internal inductive heating assembly is provided within a bore of a solid article. The heating assembly includes an interior coil inductively coupled to a portion of the article adjacent the bore to inductively heat the article. The heating assembly lacks an internal cooling mechanism and the coil thermally coupled to the adjacent article portion for transmission of heat from the coil to the article. A signal is provided to the coil to generate a magnetic flux for inductive heating of the adjacent article portion.

An apparatus for heating a flowable material comprises a core having a passageway formed therein for the communication of the flowable material, and an electric element coiled in multiple turns against the core in a helical pattern. The electric element, in use, heats the core both resistively and inductively. The electric element has no auxiliary cooling capacity. The electric element may be installed against the outside of the core, with an optional ferromagnetic yoke installed over it, or it may be installed against the inside of the core, embedded in a wear-resistant liner. The yoke and liner may be metallic material deposited such as by hot-spray technology and finished smooth.

Method precisely, quickly controls flow of molten metal to metal-casting apparatus by pumping, braking or throttling. The Faraday-Amp&eacute;re principle of current flow in a unidirectional magnetic field is employed. Permanent magnets comprising neodymium or similar high-energy, rare-earth materials provide &ldquo;reach-out&rdquo; magnetism. These neo-magnets, usually shown as cubes, are arranged in various powerful configurations driving intense unidirectional magnetic field B across a non-magnetic gap many times larger than economically feasible otherwise. This gap accommodates a conduit for pressurizing and moving a flow of molten metal. In making multiple identical castings, a controlled, intermittent, predetermined flow of molten metal is fed to a series of identical individual molds. The invention obviates needs for operating metallurgical valves or expensive tilting mechanisms for metallurgical furnaces. Existing furnaces too low to permit inflow by gravity may be rendered usable by embodiments of this invention.

Methods employing permanent magnets having reach-out magnetic fields for electromagnetically pumping, braking, and metering molten metals feeding into metal casting machines

Non-rotating, belt-levitating, cylindrical air-pillow method supporting and guiding a moving, tensed, flexible, heat-conductive casting belt along a convex, cylindrically shaped path toward an entrance into a continuous casting machine. Pressurized air is applied in belt-levitating relation to the inner surface of the casting belt moving along the path. Stationary belt-guiding elements define the path. Pressurized air is fed through throttling passages communicating with regions between stationary elements or communicating with outwardly facing stationary plateau surfaces. For reducing flexural stress in the belt moving toward the entrance, a variable radius R&plus; progressively increases toward the entrance. Escape of pressurized air is restricted by throttling barrier on a perimeter of the belt path. A cylindrical shell supports the stationary elements and is adjacent to a plenum chamber feeding pressurized air through throttling passages in the shell.

Non-rotating, levitating, cylindrical air-pillow method for supporting and guiding an endless flexible casting belt into the entrance of a continuous metal-casting machine

A non-rotating, belt-levitating, cylindrical air-pillow apparatus supports and guides a moving, tensed, flexible, heat-conductive casting belt along a convex, cylindrically shaped path toward an entrance into a continuous casting machine. Pressurized air is applied in belt-levitating relation to the inner surface of the casting belt moving along the path. Stationary belt-guiding elements define the path. Pressurized air is fed through throttling passages communicating with regions between stationary elements or communicating with outwardly facing stationary plateau surfaces. A cylinder shell supports the stationary elements and is adjacent to a plenum chamber feeding pressurized air through throttling passages in the shell. Stationary elements of suitable, durable, wear-resistant, slippery material are mounted in grooves in the shell. The air-pillow apparatus includes belt coolant application deflector or nozzles.
