Various systems and methods for battery charging are disclosed herein. As just one example, a battery charger is disclosed that includes a current feedback loop that has a pulse width modulated current control output, and a voltage feedback loop that has a pulse width modulated voltage control output. In addition, the battery charger includes a transition circuit with a digital phase/frequency detector. The digital phase/frequency detector is operable to detect a duty cycle difference between the pulse width modulated current control output and the pulse width modulated voltage control output. Further, the transition circuit is operable to transition between application of a substantially current charge control to a charging node to application of a substantially constant voltage to the charging node based at least in part on the difference in duty cycle.

A single-inductor dual-output buck converter facilitates power conversion by converting a single DC power source/supply into two separate DC outputs, each of which can be configured to provide a selected/desired voltage. The converter includes a single inductor and three power switches, which control operation of the converter. The converter has four basic stages of operation in which power is initially supplied to a first output that also stores charge. Subsequently, the stored charge of the first output is employed to provide power to a second output.

Single inductor dual output buck converter

A programmable voltage regulator configurable for reverse blocking and double power density is disclosed herein. The programmable voltage regulator includes an error amplifier that couples to receive a reference voltage. A first NMOS pass transistor connects between an auxiliary voltage input node and the output terminal of the voltage regulator, wherein the first NMOS pass transistor is biased by the output of the error amplifier. Connected between the source of the first NMOS pass transistor and the second input of the error amplifier, a feedback network provides feedback for the voltage regulator. A second NMOS pass transistor connects between the first power supply and the auxiliary voltage input node. Furthermore, an independent node control circuit biases the second NMOS pass transistor such that in a first mode of operation, a first control signal input is operable to receive a signal for controlling the second NMOS pass transistor during reverse battery condition. In a second mode of operation, independent node control circuit includes a second control signal input that is operable to couple to the output terminal of the error amplifier while simultaneously the first power supply rail is operable to couple to the output terminal of the voltage regulator to provide double power density.

Programmable voltage regulator configurable for double power density and reverse blocking

A single-inductor dual-output buck converter and control method that facilitates power conversion by converting a single DC power source/supply into two separate DC outputs, each of which can be configured to provide a selected/desired voltage by selection of respective duty cycles. The topology of the inverter includes a pair of diodes or switches that can selectively re-circulate inductor current. The converter is generally operated at a fixed frequency with four stages of operation. A first and third stage of operation provide power to a first and second output, respectively. A second and fourth stage of operation re-circulate inductor current and can partially recharge a battery type power source. The power output for each stage (voltage and current) can be selectively obtained by computing and employing appropriate time periods for the stages of operation that correspond to appropriate duty cycles.
