A chromatic dispersion compensator in a single-pass and a double-pass version is disclosed. In a single-pass version, the compensator has a diffractive grating for spatially separating an input optical signal into spatially spaced frequency components and a MEMS array of separate phase shifters, each for imparting an independent phase shift to a channel containing a range of the spatially spaced frequency components. In a double-pass version, a retroreflector is disposed to effect a double pass of the light beam through the grating and the phase shifters. The arrangement is effecting in reducing chromatic dispersion of the optical signal.

Tunable dispersion compensator

A method and apparatus is described for controlling the attenuation of multiple wavelengths signals propagating in an optical fiber, that may have a time-dependent power in each signal, to provide an output signal having a desired attenuated power in each of the multiple signals. An equalizer may be used that has various optical elements to focus and disperse light, such as a concave diffraction grating and a modulator array having modulators disposed on a concave surface. The equalizer may also be coupled to various components such as a circulator or thermally expanded core fibers.

Optical performance monitoring device for monitoring and analyzing an optical signal has a periodically movable reflective mirror to receive an input optical beam and to cyclically &ldquo;scan&rdquo; (deflect) the beam in a one-dimensional direction. The deflected beam at a varying deflection angle is directed to a linear variable filter (LVF) that passes a selected wavelength channel of the deflected beam in dependence upon the deflection angle. The selected channel is then passed to a photodetector via a focusing lens, typically a cylindrical lens. The device is durable, tunable, offers low loss, good wavelength registrability and spectral resolution.

Optical performance monitoring device

A dynamic gain flattening filter is provided that offers a smooth spectral response. The filter includes an input/output port for launching a beam of light, a dispersive element for dispersing the beam of light into a plurality of monochromatic sub-beams of light, and discrete array of controllable elements for receiving the plurality of sub-beams of light. The filter is designed such that each sub-beam of light is incident on more than one element of the discrete array for selective attenuation before being recombined by the dispersive element and redirected back to the input/output port. In another embodiment, a beam-folding mirror is provided to direct the attenuated beam to a separate output port.

Dynamic gain flattening filter

Hybrid integrated planar photonics provides silica waveguides for transport and polymer or hybrid silica/polymer waveguides for refractive-based active functions within a single integrated photonic circuit. Functions include modulation, attenuation, switching, filtering, and exceptionally low-loss transport. When the active and passive optical elements are integrated onto the same substrates, the resulting composite devices can exhibit strong functional response with little total optical loss as compared to known methods.
