A dispersion slope compensating optical waveguide, such as a fiber, having a high negative dispersion slope is provided. The optical waveguide comprises a core region and an clad layer. The core region further comprises a first region and a second region surrounding the first region. The width of the second region is sufficient to confine electromagnetic radiation within a selected wavelength range to substantially only the core region. Thus, bending loss in the waveguide is substantially reduced. The negative dispersion slope of the dispersion slope compensating optical waveguide can be used in conjunction with a dispersion compensating optical waveguide as a dual optical waveguide to compensate both the dispersion and dispersion slope of a transmission waveguide. An optical span and an optical transmission system incorporating the dual optical waveguide is also provided.

Fiber profile for achieving very high dispersion slope

Disclosed is a dispersion controlled optical waveguide fiber, and telecommunication systems using such a waveguide fiber, in which the end to end total dispersion and total dispersion slope is controlled by varying the refractive index profile along the fiber length. The waveguide fiber includes length portions each of which is characterized by total dispersion having a magnitude and sign and total dispersion slope having a magnitude and sign. The magnitudes and signs of total dispersion and total dispersion slope of respective length portions are chosen to provide for the optical waveguide fiber a desired end to end total dispersion and total dispersion slope. An advantage is achieved in the present invention by designing the refractive index profiles of the length portions to have total dispersion and total dispersion slope of opposite sign.

Controlled dispersion optical fiber

A method for doping silica soot with fluorine during laydown, including providing a bait rod, and providing a burner, wherein the burner emits a reactant flame. The method also including providing at least one first gas-feed separate from the burner, wherein the gas-feed supplies a first jet of fluorine-based gases, and depositing a layer of silica soot on the bait rod by vaporizing a silica producing gas within the reactant flame of the burner. The method further including supplying the first jet of fluorine-based gases to the silica soot deposited on to the bait rod via the first gas-feed subsequent to vaporizing at least a portion of the silica producing gas within the reactant flame of the burner.

An apparatus for transporting an optical signal is provided comprising at least two sections of optical fiber, a directional wavelength selector positioned between the at least two sections of optical fiber wherein the directional wavelength selector selectively blocks wavelengths propagating in a reverse direction, and a pump light emitting device optically coupled to the optical fiber.

Enabler of large raman gain on small effective area fibers

Multi-core optical fibers are provided in various embodiments of the present invention which include a plurality of cores. At least two cores of the plurality of cores have different associated mean propagation constants at a reference wavelength. The difference between the associated mean propagation constants may be selected to reduce cross-talk between the at least two cores as compared to cores having a same associated mean propagation constant. A primary coating of light absorbing material may be positioned between the cores to further reduce cross-talk. Also provided are methods for manufacturing the same and wavelength division multiplexing systems using the same.
