A catheter device with disposable bladder is provided for intrauterine use and comprises a reusable introducer, a disposable bladder subassembly, a liquid source for pressurizing the bladder with a liquid, and a heater for heating the liquid enclosed within the bladder to a desired treatment temperature. The reusable introducer includes a catheter with a proximal end portion thereof carrying the heater. The disposable bladder subassembly includes a distendable balloon that terminates in a hollow, elongated rigid sleeve. A contact seal exists between the disposable balloon and the introducer. The device is especially well suited for effecting necrosis of substantially all of the tissue lining human uterus, and is specifically configured for intrauterine use.

Therapeutic appliance releasing device

An attachable enclosure for a lateral lasing device comprising a fiber optic for emitting a laser beam and an exposed reflector for laterally reflecting the laser beam opposite the distal end of the fiber optic. The enclosure comprises an elongated body having a head portion with an open end and a tail portion. The elongated body defines a longitudinal flute for receiving and immobilizing the mounting stem of the lateral lasing device within its body. The hollow envelope has an open end and a fluid exit port, and is removably mounted to the head portion of the elongated body at its open end. The hollow envelope is dimensioned to surround the laser beam reflector and is in fluid flow communication with the longitudinal flute through the open end of the hollow envelope.

A surgical laser instrument including a transparent, splay, plate-like waveguide including one or more discontinuities therewithin for flattening and expanding a laser beam received through the waveguide and for emitting therefrom a relatively flat laser beam that can be utilized to sweep a selected tissue or region to be treated.

A laser energy delivery catheter emits energy laterally relative to the longitudinal axis of the catheter. The catheter distal end is a cylindrical housing provided with a sidewall aperture. Within the housing is mounted a prism spaced from the distal end of a fiber optic. The refractive index of the prism is higher than the refractive indices of the fiber optic and the coupling liquid medium. A liquid medium is utilized to cool the device when in use, and may also be utilized to optically couple the fiber optic and the prism. The catheter can be configured as a rigid or semi-rigid, hand held surgical instrument, or as a flexible device that can be inserted into body lumens through an endoscope.
