A method and apparatus for use in data processing system for selecting rules to filter data for a tunnel. A request is received to create a tunnel to another data processing system. A granularity of information about the data processing system is identified to form an identified granularity. The identified granularity of the information about the data processing system is used to select a rule, which matches the identified granularity. This rule is placed in a filter, wherein the filter associates data packets with the tunnel.

Method and apparatus for automatic configuration for internet protocol security tunnels in a distributed data processing system

A rate based flow and congestion control mechanism for packet communications whereby the acceleration and deceleration of the sending rate is moderated to be responsive to the traffic encountered. The method of the present invention also reduces oscillation in the transmission rate by being responsive to the characteristics of the network traffic and allowing burst intervals to be borrowed on a periodic basis.

Process for improving the efficiency of high performance routing

A flow control system for packet transmission networks is centered in the user applications supplying data to the network. Changes in control are responsive to changes in the transmission parameters of the network, measured in the network and transmitted to the user application. The user application specifies desired ranges of Quality of Service parameters and, when the measured network parameters fall outside of the desired range, the user application modifies the transmission strategy to match the available transmission parameters. Measurements of network parameters are made over a pre-selected observation period to average the values of the transmission parameters.

User controlled adaptive flow control for packet networks

In order to more fully support the need to interconnect dissimilar networks, methods and apparatus are set forth which allow a transport gateway between a native (SNA/APPN) network and a mixed or non-native network to preserve the dynamic functions of the native network. The functions of fully dynamic directory and route selection are supported, in addition to the ability to use parallel gateways when connecting a native network to a mixed network. The ability to route information through a gateway from a dependent LU requester in a non-native network to a dependent LU server in a SNA/APPN network is also demonstrated. This allows concatenation of native and non-native networks while maintaining the addressability and accessibility of the native network.
