Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to systems, components, and methods for transferring canisters containing radioactive material, for example, from a container assembly using a transfer assembly to a horizontal storage module (HSM). Systems in accordance with various embodiments of the present disclosure include, for example, a vertical to horizontal (VTH) transfer station for a canister and method of transfer, a horizontal to horizontal (HTH) transfer station for a canister and methods of transfer, a transport wagon system for transporting a canister to a horizontal storage module (HSM), and an HSM system for long-term storage of a canister.

Spent fuel storage system, components, and methods of use

A horizontal storage module (HSM) includes a body defining a plurality of compartments configured for receiving canisters, wherein the compartments are arranged in a first row at a first elevation and a second row at a second elevation higher than the first elevation, and wherein at least a portion of one compartment in the first row is in the same horizontal axis location as at least a portion of one compartment in the second row. A method of manufacturing the HSM includes positioning adjacent segments. A carriage assembly for the HSM includes a frame and an actuation means for lifting a cask containing a canister. A method of lifting includes receiving a cask and lifting a cask for delivery of the canister to the HSM.

A movement system for moving a dry shielded canister includes a stabilization portion, and a canister support portion engaged with the stabilization portion, the canister support portion including a roller interface for supporting and moving a canister. A method of moving a dry shielded canister includes moving a roller interface from a retracted position to an extended position to engage with the canister; and moving the canister.

Canister movement assembly for transfer, rotation, and/or inspection

A concrete storage module () is adapted to slideably receive a cylindrical canister assembly () therein. Heat dissipation fins () and a tubular heat shield () are disposed within the module to help dissipate heat emitted from the nuclear fuel assemblies stored in the canister to air flowing through the module. The canister assembly () is composed of a basket assembly () constructed from multi-layer structural plates disposed in cross-cross or egg carton configuration. A single port tool () is provided for draining water from the canister () and replacing the drain water with make-up gas. The single port tool is mounted in the cover () of the canister and is in fluid flow communication with the interior of the canister.
