A method for NO and/or SO regeneration of an NO -storage catalytic converter arranged in an exhaust treatment system of an internal combustion engine having more than one cylinder. A mass flux of reducing agents are increased in the exhaust treatment system. A control unit operates the more than one cylinder of the internal combustion engine so that the cylinders are selectively detuned. The control unit can operate a first part of the cylinders under a lean condition where &lgr;>1 and the control unit can operate a second set of the cylinders under a rich condition where &lgr;<1.

The identification signal is utilized to change the fuel injection time for the combustion chamber causing the uneveness to eliminate the latter.
