The invention relates to a method and to a spraying apparatus () for the thermal surface treatment of a metal product (). The metal product () is conveyed in a transport direction (T) through a treatment section () of a spraying apparatus () equipped with cooling nozzles () while cooling fluid is discharged through the cooling nozzles () of the spraying apparatus () onto the surfaces of the metal product (), wherein the metal product () has—viewed in the transport direction (T) of the metal product ()—a front section () and a trailing rear section (). The cooling of the surfaces of the metal product () within the spraying apparatus () occurs in such a manner that the rear section () of the metal product () is cooled more significantly than its front section (). It is thereby achieved that an essentially uniform ferrite content forms in the material of the metal product () at a predetermined depth of the same over a longitudinal area extending between the front section () and the rear section ().

A method for continuous casting from molten metal, where metal flows vertically downward from a mold and metal strip is then guided vertically downward along a vertical strand guide, cooling as it moves. The strip is deflected from the vertical direction to the horizontal direction. In the terminal area of the deflection of the strip into the horizontal direction or after the deflection into the horizontal direction, a mechanical deformation of the strip is carried out. A system for cooling a hot rail of rail steel to a fine perlitic or ferritic or perlitic/ferritic structure has a plurality of separate cooling modules with independently adjustable cooling parameters. The rail is guided downstream through the modules of the cooling stretch and through intermediate zones between the modules so as to cool the surface of the rail in each of the modules and to subject the rail to destressing or stress relief between the modules. Sensors in each of the intermediate zones detect the actual surface temperature of the rail in the respective zones, and a controller connected to the modules and to the sensors varies the cooling parameters of the cooling modules in dependence on the detected temperatures in the respective upstream zones to ensure a defined temperature in the rail that lies above a critical temperature at which bainitic structure components are formed.
