A novel latch needle has a sawslot () which is provided with facets or surfaces () both at its frontal and its rearward end surfaces (). The surfaces () are preferably parallel to one another and are oriented perpendicularly to the direction of length (L) of the shank. By virtue of this arrangement the surfaces are so oriented that the latch (), as it opens or closes, pushes any dirt past the respective surfaces through the sawslot () and thus an accumulation and compacting of dirt cushions on the noted surfaces is avoided. Generally stated, the sawslot (), particularly in the region of its end surfaces () is thus void of any surface regions which represent an obstacle to the opening or closing latch ().

A knitting tool () is provided with a braking spring () formed on the knitting tool as a one-piece member thereof. The braking spring has a thickness (W) which is less than that of the knitting tool (), whereby the braking spring () may yield to a great extent and has a soft spring characteristic. Such a result may be achieved even with short spring lengths, whereby dimensional deviations of the spring have only a slight effect on the spring force. The structure is only slightly prone to soiling. The knitting tool may be manufactured in a simple manner.

A latch needle () is provided with a latch (), which has a clearing profile () on its latch shank end (). The clearing profile () serves to keep the sawslot () free of dirt. To that end, it has at least one special clearing face ().

A stamped knitting tool, such as a latch needle, has, on its shank, a lubricant distributing arrangement formed on at least one of the opposite broad shank faces for collecting a lubricant therein during operation of the knitting tool. The lubricant distributing arrangement is constituted by a region of reduced shank thickness extending transversely to the shank length from a distance from the upper shank edge at least substantially to the lower shank edge. The region of reduced shank thickness may be a chamfer, a recess or a depression.
