Method for operating a multi-channel rotary encoder comprising at least one printed circuit board on which one or a plurality of functional units () are arranged as integrated components and are interconnected, at least one position transducer () generating absolute and incremental measurement values which are each fed to a control unit () by means of at least one channel (), the control unit being disposed as a management and safety monitoring unit and controlling a downstream-connected machine, wherein the rotary encoder consists of at least three functional units (), that the position transducer () is arranged in a first functional unit () and generates absolute location-position values () in this functional unit (), which are fed by a second functional unit (), which is connected as an interface, as first secure data () by means of the first secure channel () to the control unit (), and that the position transducer () feeds its incremental measurement values to a third functional unit () which generates absolute location-position values () by calculation and feeds said values () through the second functional unit () by means of a second secure channel () as second secure data () to the control unit () (FIG.).

Multi-channel rotary encoder

The invention is concerned with a hollow-shaft encoder with a motor-shaft protective cap, wherein the connection between the motor-shaft protective cap and hollow-shaft encoder is accomplished by means of repeatedly releasable and connectable frictional and/or a form-fitting connection via a relative movement between the motor-shaft protective cap and hollow-shaft encoder. The hollow-shaft encoder incorporates all electrical and mechanical components for the pick-up and output of the measuring signals and no electrical or mechanical components for the pick-up and output of the measuring signals are fixed on the motor-shaft protective cap. The hollow-shaft encoder with the motor-shaft protective cap is more cost effective and simpler in its design, production, assembly, warehousing, maintenance and repair; as well as easier to manipulate.
