In an exhaust system for a motor vehicle having an exhaust treatment device for after-treating exhaust gas of a combustion engine of the motor vehicle, the exhaust gas treatment device includes a first SCR catalyst, which has a zeolite material containing copper, an ammonia slip catalyst, which is arranged downstream of the first SCR catalyst, and a particulate filter. A second SCR catalyst, which has an SCR catalyst material containing vanadium, is arranged upstream of the first SCR catalyst.

An exhaust gas after-treatment unit for an internal combustion engine, particularly for a motor vehicle, includes a first selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter through which the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine can flow and at least one particle filter for retaining the soot particles from the exhaust gas. A method for operating an exhaust gas purification system connected to an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle is disclosed. The purification system includes an SCR catalyst for catalyzed reaction of nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine with ammonia. The method includes adding a reducing agent containing ammonia to the exhaust gas upstream of the SCR catalyst at a predeterminable dosage rate and determining a pressure value correlating with an absolute pressure in the exhaust gas purification system on the input side of the SCR catalyst. The dosage rate is specified at least as a function of the pressure value.

A method for operating a motor vehicle internal combustion engine with an exhaust system branch in which a wall-flow exhaust particle filter is arranged. An amount of ash and an amount of soot accumulated in the exhaust particle filter are continuously determined. An ash increase value characterizing an increase in the amount of ash is determined and if pre-set conditions are present, the operation of the internal combustion engine is changed over to a special operating mode for performing an ash detachment and transportation operation, in which operating variables of the internal combustion engine are set such that, on the exhaust entry side in the exhaust particle filter, a pre-settable minimum exhaust flow speed results at which detachment of ash attached to the channel walls of the exhaust particle filter and transportation of detached ash in the direction of the respective inlet channel end is made possible.

A line for gas flow communicates with the additional auxiliary valves. A piston internal-combustion engine has a control system for controlling the number of strokes of the combustion process taking place inside a combustion space. As a function of operating parameters, the control system controls the engine operating process such that the process has a variable cycle of at least four strokes. A pushing of a charge out of a combustion space of the piston internal-combustion engine does not take place before one or several operating parameters have reached one defined limit value, respectively.

A process for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases, preferably those from diesel engines in vehicles, using pulsed superstoichiometric addition of NH.sub.3 or NH.sub.3 -releasing substances, comprises controlling the pulsed superstoichiometric addition of NH.sub.3 in such a way that, after it has started, the addition is interrupted again only when the amount of NH.sub.3 stored in the catalyst has reached a specific upper threshold value which is predetermined in accordance with the catalyst properties and the catalyst volume, the amount of NH.sub.3 stored being calculated from the difference between the metered amount of NH.sub.3 and the amount of NO.sub.x separated off, which is determined from the NO.sub.x concentration in the exhaust gas and the average degree of separation, and the addition of NH.sub.3 is resumed only when the amount of NH.sub.3 stored in the catalyst, which is determined in the same way, has reached a predetermined lower threshold value, this pulsed addition of NH.sub.3 being interrupted after a predetermined number of cycles until the amount of NH.sub.3 stored in the catalyst, which is determined in the manner described, has completely reacted, this completing one entire cycle of the pulsed addition of NH.sub.3.
