A method, for use with systems that transmit information in data packets, includes running a first scheduling method on at least one first-stage scheduler device which guarantees first connection parameters during a transmission process. The first connection parameters correspond to transmission rates for the data packets. The method also includes storing a queue identifier in packet headers of the data packets and determining to run, based on the queue identifier, a second scheduling method on a second-stage scheduler device which limits second connection parameters during the transmission process. The second connection parameters correspond to higher transmission rates for the data packets than the first connection parameters and precedes the first scheduling method. The method further includes bypassing the first scheduling method when the transmission rates are not to be limited.

Process for optimizing load distribution between connection sections of data package transmission systems

Message cells that are allocated to virtual connections having different priorities are transmitted jointly over at least one transmission line of an ATM system working according to an asynchronous transfer mode. While being transmitted via the respective transmission lines, these message cells pass through a buffer memory individually allocated thereto. Given a buffer memory exhibiting a specific filling degree, one or more message cells from message cells of a selected virtual connection of low priority, which are, stored at the moment in the buffer memory, are discarded with the arrival of a message cell on the respective transmission line belonging to a virtual connection of relatively high priority, and dependent on the number of message cells stored for this virtual connection having low priority.

Method and circuit arrangement for the transmission of message cells during the course of virtual connections having different priorities

In up-to-date ATM network systems, data in cells is transmitted by the &ldquo;weighted fair queueing scheduling&rdquo; process. To use connection sections in a particularly efficient manner, the cell streams are prioritized on the basis of said known process in that the weighting factors allocated to a first quantity of cell streams are selected in a very different manner to the weighting factors allocated to the remaining quantity of cell streams.

Method for prioritizing cell streams in systems which transmit information by an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)

A method and a circuit configuration for the transmission of message units in message streams of different priority include passing the message units which are respectively associated with the message streams through a queue that is specific to the message stream. The queues are combined to form groups to ensure a throughput guarantee for the message streams in addition to observing the priorities. At least two of the groups in each case are combined to form a partner group. The groups which belong to a partner group are controlled in such a manner that, in the case where no message unit can currently be transmitted from one of the queue groups, the transmission capability is transferred from the relevant queue group to one of the remaining groups in the respective partner group.
