A method and architecture for operating with distributed (or segmented) on-chip digital interfaces such as the Inter-Integrated Circuit protocol and a Serial Peripheral Interface protocol. This method and architecture, illustratively, divides the available address space of the digital interface register arrays of a device into one or more segments referred to as a fundamental digital interface circuit. Such segmentation allows for each fundamental digital interface circuit to be placed in proximity of the digitally controlled circuit(s) (e.g., analog circuit(s)) which share some operational connection and for exchanging communication in accordance with a plurality of inputs to the device.

Method and apparatus for a segmented on-chip digital interface block

According to one embodiment, an optical receiver adapted to recover OOK or PAM data carried by a modulated optical carrier has an optical detector adapted to produce a sequence of vector pairs having first and second digital vectors indicative of complex values of first and second polarization components, respectively, of the modulated optical carrier at a corresponding sampling time. The optical receiver also has a digital processor that is connected to receive the sequence and is adapted to perform a rotation on each pair in a manner that tends to compensate for polarization rotation produced by transmitting the modulated optical carrier from an optical transmitter thereof to the optical receiver. The digital processor is further adapted to estimate values of the OOK or PAM data encoded onto each of the first and second polarization components based on the vectors produced by the rotation in a manner responsive to values of energy errors in the estimated values.

Polarization tracking and signal equalization for optical receivers configured for on-off keying or pulse amplitude modulation signaling

A method for determining symbols PSK modulated on an optical carrier includes interfering a first polarization component of the modulated optical carrier and a reference optical carrier in a first optical mixer and interfering the first polarization component of the modulated optical carrier and the reference with a different relative phase in a second optical mixer. The method also includes sampling the interfered carriers from the first optical mixer to produce first digital sampled values and sampling the interfered carriers from the second optical mixer to produce second digital sampled values. The first and second digital sampled values of a sampling period form a first complex sampling value thereof. The method also includes offsetting a phase of a complex signal value corresponding to each first complex sampling value to correct for a phase error caused by a frequency offset between the modulated and reference optical carriers.

Frequency estimation in an intradyne optical receiver

A method for operating an optical receiver includes at each of a sequence of sampling times, producing a first 2D complex digital signal vector whose first component is indicative of a phase and amplitude of one polarization component of a modulated optical carrier and whose second component is indicative of a phase and amplitude of another polarization component of the carrier. For each one of the sampling times, the method includes constructing a second 2D complex digital signal vector that is a rotation of the first 2D complex digital vector for the one of sampling times. The rotation compensates a polarization rotation produced by transmission of the modulated optical carrier between an optical transmitter and the optical receiver.

Adaptive polarization tracking and equalization in coherent optical receivers

A receiver for coherent detection of a PSK modulated optical carrier includes an optical detector, digital-to-analog converters, and a digital module. The optical detector is configured to mix the modulated optical carrier with two phase components of a reference optical carrier and to produce analog output signals representative of optical signals produced by said mixing. The digital-to-analog converters are connected to receive the analog output signals and to produce digital signals from the received analog output signals. The digital module is connected to receive the digital signals and to perform one of compensating the received digital signals for a conjugate phase misalignment between the mixed components, extracting phase of the received digital signals, and estimating a frequency offset between the two carriers from the received digital signals.

Coherent phase-shift-keying

In one embodiment, a receiver of the invention has an optical detector coupled to a digital processor. The optical detector is adapted to mix the received optical quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) signal with an optical local oscillator (LO) signal having a time-varying phase offset with respect to the carrier frequency of the QAM signal to produce two digital measures of the QAM signal. The digital processor is adapted to: (i) determine the amplitude and phase differentials for each QAM-symbol transition based on these digital measures; (ii) adjust each phase differential for an amount of phase drift associated with the time-varying phase offset; (iii) map each QAM-symbol transition onto a constellation point of a 2D decision map using the transition's amplitude differential and adjusted phase differential; and (iv) based on the mapping results, recover the data encoded in the optical QAM signal.

Optical quadrature-amplitude modulation receiver

In one embodiment, a receiver of the invention has a detector coupled to a digital processor. The detector is adapted to mix the received PSK signal with a local oscillator (LO) signal having a time-varying phase offset with respect to the carrier frequency of the PSK signal to produce a digital measure of the PSK signal. The digital processor is adapted to: (i) estimate a frequency offset between the carrier frequency of the PSK signal and the LO signal; (ii) remove from an angular component of the digital measure a component corresponding to the frequency offset to generate a frequency-offset-adjusted signal; (iii) for each time slot of the PSK signal, estimate the phase of a respective PSK constellation symbol based on an angular component of the frequency-offset-adjusted signal and an angular component of a recursive function; (iv) estimate a phase differential for a PSK-symbol transition based on two consecutive phase estimates; (v) map each estimated phase differential onto a phase increment corresponding to a symbol transition in the PSK constellation; and (vi) recover a data sequence encoded in the PSK signal based on the mapping results.

Recursive phase estimation for a phase-shift-keying receiver

An optical heterodyne receiver and a method of extracting data from a phase-modulated input optical signal. In one embodiment, the optical heterodyne receiver includes: (1) a photonic quadrature demodulator having first and second optical inputs and first and second electrical outputs and configured to generate at the first and second electrical outputs an in-phase signal and a quadrature-phase signal, respectively, in response to receiving a modulated optical signal at the first optical input and a reference optical oscillator signal at the second optical input, (2) a passive radio frequency single sideband demodulator coupled to the photonic quadrature demodulator and configured to extract at least one sideband of the in-phase signal or the quadrature-phase signal and (3) at least one analog-to-digital converter coupled to the passive radio frequency single sideband demodulator and configured to receive and sample the at least one sideband.

Optical heterodyne receiver and method of extracting data from a phase-modulated input optical signal

An apparatus and method for use in an adaptive optical equalizer including, in one embodiment an optical equalizer having an input and output coupled to receive an incoming optical signal and configured to generate an output optical signal by phase modulation and/or amplitude modulation of the receive optical signal in response to electronic control signals. A photodiode is configured to receive the output optical signal and generate an representative current signal. A control signal generator is configured to generate the electronic control signals in accordance with predetermined criteria and in response to the representative current signal from the photodiode. An interferometer is connected to receive the incoming and output optical signal from the optical equalizer, the differential amplifier is configured to receive electronic versions of outputs from the interferometer for generating a difference signal and supplying the difference signal to the control signal generator.

Adaptive optical equalization for chromatic and/or polarization mode dispersion compensation and joint opto-electronic equalizer architecture

A method and apparatus are provided for performing electronic equalization in optical communication systems. Coefficient values in equalizers, such as feed forward equalizers or decision feedback equalizers, are updated using higher-order algorithms in the Least-Mean-2Nth-Order family. An optical receiver includes a photo-detector for converting a received optical signal to an electrical signal; and an equalizer for removing intersymbol interference from the electrical signal, wherein coefficients of the equalizer are updated based upon a least-mean 2N-order (LMN) algorithm (N is greater than one). Feed forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer implementations are disclosed. The non-symmetric nature of optical noise is addressed by varying A slicer threshold based on an incoming signal distribution to reduce bit errors.

Method and apparatus for electronic equalization in optical communication systems

An apparatus includes a delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter for digitalizing an analog input signal. The &#x394;-&#x3a3; ADC includes an analog band-pass loop filter configured to filter an analog signal derived from the analog input signal and a quantizer configured to produce a series of digital signals by sampling the filtered analog signal from the loop filter at a sampling frequency. The loop filter has a center band-pass frequency. The series of digital signals has a data-carrying frequency spectrum that is a mirror image of a data-carrying frequency spectrum of the analog input signal. The data-carrying frequency spectrum of the series is located between the center band-pass frequency and zero.
