An improvement to the coated wire electrode has been accomplished via inclusion of a fortiophore into a sensor device. Sensor devices of the present invention include: an internal reference element; a membrane; and a fortiophore. Fortiophores are neutral charge carriers, which complex reversibly a corresponding ion of the conductive material used as the internal reference element. The fortiophore provides an electrochemically defined and reproducible solid internal contact between the membrane and the internal reference element. This solid internal contact, for example, in ion selective sensors, provides more reproducible potential offsets and better precision, and faster wet up. The fortiophores can be utilized in other electrochemical devices.

Solid contact system for potentiometric sensors

Plastic material compositions which comprise a plastic material matrix containing a benzhydrol-tetracarboxylic acid tetraester as a plasticizer are disclosed. The plasticizer is firmly anchored within the matrix such that migration of the plasticizer, and any other optionally present matrix components having a molecular weight of at least 100, are inhibited within the matrix. The plasticizer and matrix components are inhibited from eluting from the matrix when the matrix is brought in intimate contact with a liquid or solid material. These compositions are particularly useful as shaped bodies possessing highly elastic and adhesive characteristics.

Plastic material containing a tetracarboxylic acid tetraester-plasticizer

Shaped bodies of plastic material have a high elasticity and high adhesive characteristics if they contain, referred to the percentage of the plastic material of said shaped bodies, a higher percentage of a benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid tetraester. In said benzophenone-tetracartoxylate the ester forming alcohol component is an alkanol, alkenol or alkynol having 4-24 carbon atoms. The shaped bodies can be adhered to a substrate by pressing them onto it. The inventive shaped bodies are preferably strands, fibers, filaments or foils, for example foils for the packaging of products. Preferred shaped bodies are ion sensitive membranes for the determination of the concentration of ions and said membranes contain furthermore an ion selective component for the ion to be determined. Solutions of the inventive shaped bodies in a volatile organic solvent can be applied to a substrated and after the solvent is evaporated there remains on the substrate a firmly adherent elastic film.
