A heat exchanger system for cooling liquid having a plurality of finned tube arrays and a plurality of fans for inducing air through the finned tube array comprising: at least one wind deflector installed along the long side of the finned tube arrays on at least one side of the arrays. The present invention for includes a method for minimizing the undesired effect of wind on the operation of a heat exchanger system for cooling liquid having a plurality of finned tube arrays and a plurality of fans for inducing air through the finned tube array, the method comprising the steps of: setting the angle of deflection of the wind deflectors other than the angle of deflection of the uppermost position of the wind deflectors; collecting readings of outlet temperature sensor of the heat exchanger, ambient temperature, wind sensor and inlet air pressure sensor of the heat exchanger; recording readings of outlet temperature sensor of the heat exchanger, ambient temperature, wind sensor and inlet air pressure sensor of the heat exchanger; comparing readings of outlet temperature sensor of the heat exchanger, ambient temperature, wind sensor and inlet air pressure sensor of the heat exchanger to previous readings; and carrying out a correction command if the readings have changed.

Device and method for minimizing the effect of ambient conditions on the operation of a heat exchanger

A heat exchanger system for cooling liquid includes a generally rectangular arrangement of a plurality of horizontally spaced finned tube arrays arranged above the ground, the arrangement having longer sides extending in a length direction and shorter sides extending in a width direction. A plurality of fans are provided above the finned tube arrays for inducing air through the finned tube arrays, wherein at least two of said fans are mutually spaced in the width direction. At least one wind deflector is provided adjacent one of the longer sides, wherein the at least one wind deflector is installed on the ground separately from any of the plurality of finned tube arrays.

For minimizing the effect of wind on a heat exchanger system having a plurality of finned tube arrays and a plurality of fans, a method includes providing a wind louver below one of the fans. The wind louver is arranged to divert wind flowing in an approximately horizontal direction below the one of the plurality of fans to instead flow in a direction that is more vertically upward as compared to the approximately horizontal direction. Readings of a heat exchanger outlet temperature, ambient temperature, wind, and inlet air pressure are collected and recorded, and compared to previous readings. The louver height is changed if the readings have changed.

The present invention provides a method for producing load-following power using low to medium temperature heat source fluid comprising the steps of: reducing the power level produced by a Rankine cycle power plant producing load-following power operating on a low to medium temperature heat source fluid during one period of time; storing heat not used during the first period of time; and using the heat stored for producing power during a second period of time.

Dispatchable power plant and method for using the same

An air cooled, finned heat exchanger tube includes a metallic tube through which fluid to be cooled is flowable. The tube has an outer surface on which axially spaced axial indentations are formed over its circumference, and a plurality of axially spaced fins each of which has a main element formed with heat transfer promoting patterns and a base angled with respect to said main element. The base is frictionally and irremovably secured within a corresponding indentation so that said tube outer surface is completely covered.

A system for producing power at remote locations comprises: a closed cycle vapor turbine unit having an evaporator containing liquid working fluid, a turbine receiving vapor of the evaporated working fluid for producing power by way of an electrical generator coupled to the turbine, a condenser and means for returning the working fluid condensate from the condenser to the evaporator; a biomass furnace associated with the evaporator for heating working fluid present in the evaporator and evaporating a portion of the working fluid; and a controller for controlling the amount of biomass fuel supplied to the biomass furnace in accordance with energy requirements of a customer load. Further, a method for producing power using the system is also provided.

Method of and apparatus for producing power in remote locations

In accordance with the present invention, apparatus is provided for producing power comprising a reformer for reforming a hydrocarbon material and producing syngas comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the apparatus comprises a combustion chamber of a gas turbine unit that receives the syngas and combusts the syngas and produces flue gases comprising carbon dioxide and other gases that are supplied to the gas turbine contained in the gas turbine unit. In addition, the apparatus includes a bottoming cycle unit of a combined cycle power plant that produces power and from which combustion gases exit. A carbon dioxide separator is also included in the apparatus that receives combustion gases exiting the bottoming cycle unit and separates carbon dioxide from the other combustion gases. A compressor is provided that supplies the separated carbon dioxide to the reformer for reforming of the hydrocarbon material. Preferably, according to the present invention, the reformer comprises a solar reformer. In addition, the gas turbine unit includes a compressor that compresses air and also an electric generator coupled to the gas turbine that produces electricity.

Method of and apparatus for producing power using a reformer and gas turbine unit

Retrofit equipment includes an auxiliary gas turbine unit including an auxiliary compressor for compressing ambient air to produce compressed air, a solar collector that receives the compressed air for heating the same to produce heated compressed air, and an auxiliary turbine coupled to the auxiliary compressor and to an auxiliary generator for expanding the heated compressed air and driving the auxiliary compressor and auxiliary generator thereby producing power and hot exhaust gases. When solar insolation is available, a flow control selectively supplies the hot exhaust gases from the retrofit equipment to a boiler which is part of a conventional fossil fueled power plant. The boiler has heat exchanger coils containing water and receives hot exhaust gases for vaporizing water in the coils and producing steam which is supplied to a steam turbine coupled to a generator for expanding steam produced by the boiler, and driving the generator and producing power and expanded steam. A condenser condenses the expanded steam to condensate, and a pump returns the condensate to the boiler. When solar insolation is not available. e.g., during the night, the flow control supplies the boiler with hot gases from a primary gas turbine unit which includes a primary compressor that compresses ambient air to produce compressed air, and a combustor that receives the compressed air for burning fossil fuel and heating the compressed air to produce heated compressed air that is supplied to the primary turbine.

Apparatus for producing power and desalinated water from geothermal fluid according to the present invention comprises: a geothermal power plant that produces power from geothermal fluid supplied thereto; means for supplying sea water to the condenser of said geothermal power plant that produces heated sea water; and a desalination plant to which the heated sea water is supplied and which produces drinking water. Preferably, the geothermal power plant that produces power comprises an organic Rankine cycle geothermal power plant that produces power. Alternatively, the geothermal power plant that produces power comprises an organic combined cycle Rankine cycle geothermal power plant that produces power. In a further alternative, the geothermal power plant that produces power comprises a closed cycle steam geothermal power plant that produces power. In a still further alternative, the geothermal power plant that produces power comprises an ammonia cycle geothermal power plant that produces power. As far as the desalination plant is concerned, the desalination plant preferably comprises a multi-flash desalination plant. In an alternative, the desalination plant comprises a reverse osmosis desalination plant.

According to the present invention, a method and apparatus are provided for producing power from a hydrocarbon fuel and water vapor heated in a solar reformer to form hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The method provides the following steps: supplying the hydrogen and carbon monoxide from the solar reformer to a steam generator for producing steam and heat depleted hydrogen and carbon monoxide; supplying exhaust gases from the exhaust of a gas turbine to the steam generator; supplying the steam to a superheater for producing superheated steam; supplying the heat depleted hydrogen and carbon monoxide from the steam generator to a preheater for preheating the hydrocarbon fuel prior to supplying the hydrocarbon fuel to the solar reformer and producing preheated hydrocarbon fuel and further heat depleted hydrogen and carbon monoxide; adding the superheated steam to the preheated hydrocarbon fuel prior to supplying the preheated hydrocarbon fuel to the solar reformer; and supplying the further heat depleted hydrogen and carbon monoxide to a Rankine cycle power plant for producing power and cooled and dried hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In addition, the present invention includes providing apparatus for carrying the above-mentioned method steps of the present invention.

Method of an apparatus for producing power having a solar reformer and a steam generator which generate fuel for a power plant

A hygroscopic power plant utilizes low salinity liquid (e.g., sea water having a salinity of about 4%) and a source of high salinity liquid (e.g., brine having a salinity of about 38%) for generating electricity. The plant includes a flash chamber to which liquid is supplied and within which water in the liquid is flashed into steam producing more concentrated liquid. A steam turbine is responsive to the steam for generating electricity and producing heat depleted steam. A condenser is provided to which high salinity liquid and the heat depleted steam are supplied for directly contacting the steam with the high salinity liquid whereby the steam condenses on the liquid producing diluted high salinity liquid. A regenerator is provided for evaporating water from the diluted high salinity liquid to produce the high salinity liquid supplied to the condenser. Apparatus is provided for combining the low sea water liquid with the concentrated liquid produced by the flash chamber to form the liquid supplied to the flash chamber.

Method of and means for producing power using concentrated brine

A gas turbine system with a heat recovery cycle includes a gas turbine unit that produces hot exhaust gases which are applied to a heat recovery heat exchanger containing a working fluid responsive to applied hot gases for producing vaporized working fluid and cooled gases which are vented. A turbine connected to a generator and responsive to the vaporized working fluid generates power and produces expanded working fluid. A condenser condenses the expanded vaporized working fluid to condensate which is returned to the heat recovery heat exchanger. A control device (94) controls the temperature of the applied hot gases, based on a sensed temperature (89) and include mixer apparatus (87) for mixing ambient air with the hot exhaust gases and producing a mixture of hot exhaust gases and ambient air before the mixture is applied to the heat recovery heat exchanger.
