An optical device includes an objective, an eyepiece and a power corrector, each of which includes one or more lenses, and each of which has a respective focal length. The input focal length of the device is defined jointly by the focal lengths of the objective and the power corrector. The magnification of the device is the ratio of the input focal length to the eyepiece focal length. The combined aberration of the eyepiece and the power corrector is less than the characteristic aberration of the eyepiece. The objective, the eyepiece and the power corrector together define an apparent field of view of at least 75 degrees and an exit pupil. The eyepiece lens diameter(s) is/are no greater than twelve times the pupil diameter and three times the eyepiece focal length.

Compact magnifying optical system with wide field of view

An rotating optical device in which the angular relationship of the exit beam to the incident beam is independent of the degree of rotation of the device. Two optical elements are defined by planes that intersect at a 45.degree. angle. A third optical element is defined by a plane that bisects the 45.degree. angle. The device is rotated about the line included by all three planes. In an embodiment of the device configured as a Sagnac interferometer, the first two optical elements are reflectors and the third element is a beamsplitter. Preferably, up to eight such interferometers are mounted on the same rotating platform and with the same rotational axis, for extended spectral bandwidth. The scope of the invention also includes spectral imaging devices based on such interferometers.

A door-mounted security peephole providing an undistorted view over a relatively large area by use of a beam splitter optical system. The peephole comprises a door-mounted housing containing a beam splitter and light source arranged so that light is reflected from the beam splitter and toward the area exterior of the door. An observer behind the door may view the door exterior area including a visitor at the door entrance. The visitor, however, cannot see the observer through the beam splitter, because of the light reflected therefrom, thus increasing the overall security aspect. The design exploits the contrast sensitivity of the human eye as a function of field brightness.
