A method of detecting epithelial cancer is described that includes the steps of: (a) determining the level of beta defensin 3 (BD-3) and beta defensin 2 (BD-2) in a suspect sample obtained from a subject; (b) comparing the level of BD-3 to BD-2 determined in the suspect sample to obtain a suspect BD-3/BD-2 ratio, (c) comparing the suspect BD-3/BD-2 ratio to a healthy BD-3/BD-2 ratio to obtain a diagnostic BD-3/BD-2 ratio; and (d) characterizing the subject as having epithelial cancer if the diagnostic BD-3/BD-2 ratio is greater than 1. A microfluidic device for detecting epithelial cancer using the diagnostic BD-3/BD-2 ratio is also described.

Epithelial cancer evaluation using beta defensin

Electrophoresis is used to identify presence of a target compound in a patient sample based on a charge state of the compound and a label. The charge state of the compound correlates to a total net charge of a binder conjugated to the compound. The bound complex or 'bound complex' with the label is then applied to the electrophoresis substrate. An electric potential is applied to the substrate for a time period and causes the labeled bound complex to migrate toward the electrode with opposite charge of the labeled bound complex at a migration velocity to form a migration pattern over the time period. At some time during or at the end of the time period, the labeled bound complex produces a bound complex band as a result of its migration across the substrate. The presence of the compound is identified based on the labeled bound complex band and one or both of the migration pattern and the migration velocity.

Using electrophoresis for disease detection based on controlled molecular charge

A diagnostic system that includes a cartridge and a reader is discussed herein. The cartridge can contain a patient sample, such as a blood sample. The cartridge is inserted into the reader and the patient sample is analyzed. The reader contains various analysis systems, such as an electrophoresis detection system that uses electrophoresis testing to identify and quantify various components of the blood sample. The reader can process data from the various patient sample analysis to provide interpretative results indicative of a disorder, condition, disease, or infection of the patient.

The reader can process data from the various patient sample analysis to provide interpretative results indicative of a disorder, condition, disease and/or infection of the patient.

A diagnostic system detects and/or measures hemoglobin variants in blood of subject, such as HbA1c, to determine blood glucose concentration in the subject.

Diagnostic system for hemoglobin analysis

As one example, a fluid monitoring apparatus includes a dielectric microsensor that includes a capacitive sensing structure integrated into a microfluidic channel. The microfluidic channel includes a fluid input to receive a sample volume of a sample under test (SUT). A transmitter provides an input radio frequency (RF) signal to an RF input of the microsensor. A receiver receives an output RF signal from the microsensor. A computing device computes dielectric permittivity values of the SUT that vary over a time interval based on the output RF signal. The computing device may determine an indication of platelet count based on the computed dielectric permittivity values over at least a portion of the time interval.

Dielectric sensing for blood characterization

As one example, a fluid monitoring apparatus includes a dielectric microsensor that includes a capacitive sensing structure integrated into a microfluidic channel. The microfluidic channel includes a fluid input to receive a sample volume of a sample under test (SUT). A transmitter provides an input radio frequency (RF) signal to an RF input of the microsensor. A receiver receives an output RF signal from the microsensor. A computing device computes dielectric permittivity values of the SUT that vary over a time interval based on the output RF signal. The computing device may determine at least one permittivity parameter based on the computed dielectric permittivity values over at least a portion of the time interval.

Dielectric sensing for sample characterization

A sensor system can be configured to perform dielectric spectroscopy (DS). For example, the system can include a sensor configured to measure dielectric permittivity of a fluid in response to an RF input signal. Associated interface electronics can include a transmitter to drive the sensor with the RF input signal and a receiver to receive and process an RF output signal from the sensor in response to the RF input signal.

Sensor apparatus, systems and methods of making same

Disclosed herein are optical sensor platform(s) employing hyperbolic metamaterial(s) supporting highly confined bulk plasmon guided modes over broad wavelength range(s) from visible to near-infrared. By exciting these modes using&#x2014;for example&#x2014;a two-dimensional (2D) grating-coupling technique, sensors according to the present disclosure advantageously exhibit extreme sensitivity modes up to a maximum of 30,000 nm per refractive index unit and a record figure of merit of 590 thereby permitting detection of ultralow-molecular-weight bio-molecules at picomolar concentrations.
