A group of specific sulfated flavonoid agents carrying cholesterol modification display promising in vivo anti-cancer activity through selective inhibition of cancer stem cells, and not of adult or hematopoietic stem cells. The compounds exhibit high potency, excellent oral bioavailability and a physiologically relevant therapeutic window.

Lipidic analogs of anti-cancer stem cell agent

Sulfated and unsulfated flavonoid oligomers as inhibitors of cancer stem cells (CSCs) are provided. In particular, sulfated flavonoid dimers are shown to selectively inhibit CSCs growth and self-renewal both in vitro and in vivo.

Sulfated and unsulfated flavonoid oligomers as cancer therapeutics

Low molecular weight sulfated beta-O4 lignin (SbO4L) are potent inhibitors of coagulation with high selectivity.

Sulfated beta-O4 low molecular weight lignins

Compounds which allosterically modulate and/or inhibit factor XIa activity are provided, as are methods of their use. These compounds include i) sulfated gallolyl glucosides, ii) sulfated quinazolinones, and iii) sulfated inositol analogs. The compounds used as anticoagulant agents.

Allosteric modulators of factor XIa as anticoagulant agents

Cinnamic acid-based oligomers and therapeutic uses thereof are provided. The oligomers are used as anti-inflammation agents, inhibitors of elastase and anti-oxidants, and in some cases (e.g. the treatment of lung disorders such as lung cancer) all three activities are simultaneously beneficial. Subsets of the oligomers (e.g. &#x3b2;-O4 and &#x3b2;-5 trimers and tetramers) are used as anticoagulants.

Cinnamic acid-based oligomers and uses thereof

Methods to generate a distinctive fingerprint (pattern of migration) for a sample of complex, polydisperse heparins are provided. The methods involve adding resolving agents such as polyamines to a heparin sample and then analyzing the sample with a technique that separates macromolecules according to charge to mass ratio (e.g. capillary electrophoresis). The resulting electropherogram is unique to and characteristic of the heparin sample. The methods may be used, for example, to monitor the quality and consistency of various heparin preparations.

Method for finger-printing heparins

Sulfated bis-cyclic compounds that are potent anticoagulants and methods for their manufacture are provided. The sulfated compounds are bis-cyclic moieties comprised of an isoquinoline ring joined to a phenyl ring with the general chemical structure formula (I) where Ris hydrogen or a sulfate moiety, Ris either hydrogen or carboxylate moiety; Ris a hydrogen or oxygen; and Ris a hydrogen if Ris a hydrogen, and is absent if Ris oxygen. Counterions such as sodium may also be coordinated to the sulfate and carboxylate moieties.
