A method for selectively forming at least one region of a gasket sheet metal layer made of a spring steel, wherein, for the purposes of facilitating the forming process, the region of the sheet metal layer that is to be formed is heated up inductively for reducing the hardness thereof and the electromagnetic alternating field serving for the inductive heating process is concentrated onto the region that is to be formed, wherein the application time of the electromagnetic alternating field on each part of said region of the sheet metal layer that is to be formed amounts to at most approximately 2 seconds.

Method for selectively forming (plastic working) at least one region of a sheet metal layer made from a sheet of spring steel, and a device for carrying out this method

A sealing system, in particular for sealing multiple part exhaust-gas lines for an internal combustion engine, has at least a first flange part () and a second flange part () guiding a flow of heat (). The flange parts () delimit a receiving space () for at least one sealing element () between them and adjoin one another. Each flange part forms an outwardly projecting annular flange () facing away from the flow of heat (), and extending transversely with respect to the heat flow. Chambering of the receiving space () is formed for the sealing element () by an annular groove () open at the end face () of at least one flange part () and recessed axially into said end face (). At least one covering element () is arranged in the annular groove () and provides thermal shielding for the sealing element () at least on its side facing the end face () of the flange part ().

Sealing system for exhaust-gas lines

The invention relates to a metallic cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion engine having a cylinder block with adjacent combustion chambers and a cylinder head connected to the said block by bolts, having at least one sheet metal layer of resilient metal, which is provided with a plurality of combustion chamber openings corresponding to the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine, and also fluid and bolt passage openings, where, around each combustion chamber opening, at a distance from the latter, leaving a straight sheet metal section in the opening edge area, a bead is provided, whose spring travel is limited by a stopper extending concentrically with respect to the bead the stopper being profiled in terms of height and/or width in accordance with reductions in compression pressure to be expected in specific areas on account of reduced component stiffness of cylinder block and cylinder head in the clamped state of the cylinder head gasket, where, when profiling the stopper height and/or width, the increase in the compression pressure as a result of thermal expansions to be expected because of the operating temperature of the internal combustion engine is additionally taken into account in such a way that the profiling is designed substantially in accordance with a mid-range between an increase in compression pressure resulting from thermal expansions and a decrease in compression pressure resulting from component stiffnesses.

Cylinder head gasket

Flat gasket comprising a first sheet metal layer consisting of a spring steel and a second sheet metal layer consisting of a ductile steel, the first layer being provided with a sealing bead, and the second layer being provided in an edge area bordering on an edge of the layer with a thickened zone as supporting element for receiving pressing forces; to increase the design possibilities for such a supporting element, the latter is formed by at least one elongate arch of the second layer, which is stamped into the edge area of the second layer and extends approximately parallel to the free edge of the edge area, the arch being compressed in such a way that the metal volume of the supporting element is at least three times the total hollow space volume which the supporting element and two tangential planes abutting on the latter and extending parallel to the plane of the second layer include between them.

Method of manufacturing a flat gasket

In order to achieve good sealing in both a cold and a warm engine by sealing features which are as simple as possible, an at least substantially metallic cylinder head gasket comprises a gasket plate with only one layer of sheet steel extending over the entire gasket plate, and around each combustion chamber opening of the gasket plate, a combustion chamber sealing element forming on at least one side of the gasket an elevation with a gasket sealing surface surrounding the combustion chamber opening in a closed manner for being pressed against an engine component sealing surface. The height profile of the gasket sealing surface corresponds prior to installation of the gasket to the topography of the sealing gap to be sealed off by the gasket when the gasket is installed, and the elevation has a metallic main body whose material is selected and whose cross section is designed such that the main body will not be deformable in its height under the maximum load occurring when the cylinder head gasket is installed and the engine is operating. At least one sealing bead is provided in the gasket plate, which surrounds at least one fluid opening of the gasket in a closed manner and is elastically deformable in its height.

In order to provide a cylinder head gasket, comprising at least one beaded gasket sheet, which comprises at least one combustion chamber opening and a bead, which may be vertically deformed and surrounds the combustion chamber opening, and at least one deformation limiting means adjacent to the bead, which can be produced simply and with low material usage and which is flexible with respect to the arrangement and configuration of the deformation limiting means, it is proposed that the deformation limiting means comprises at least one deformation limiting element disposed on a deformation limiting sheet of the cylinder head gasket, said element having at least one reinforcement region, which is located at a distance from the combustion chamber opening and is formed by separating a region of the deformation limiting sheet along a separating line and subsequently bending this region out of the plane of the deformation limiting sheet.

A metallic cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion engine comprises a carrier plate sandwiched between flat cover plates, the multi-layer structure having a pattern of openings as dictated by the arrangement of engine cylinders, head mounting bolts and fluid flow passages. Resilient beads which cooperate with the carrier plate to form ring seals are formed in the cover plates and are arranged coaxially with respect to the apertures in the gasket. The beads are offset radially outwardly from the edges of the apertures and a deformation limiter is provided between each bead and the edge of the coaxial aperture, the deformation limiters being in the form of either a pair of oppositely directed, generally trapezoidal shaped deformable beads in the support plate or a single such trapezoidal shaped bead and a cooperating ring member which covers the concave side of the bead.
