A grinding wheel with a working surface having a complex profile is subjected to a path-controlled dressing operation by an apparatus which moves in the direction of the Z-axis of the machine while the grinding wheel moves in the direction of the X-axis. When necessary in view of configuration of the momentarily dressed portion of the working surface, the grinding wheel is turned about the B-axis of the machine, and such axis is remote from the point of contact between the dressing tool and the working surface and is normal to the Z- and X-axes. The controls of the grinding machine cause the dressing tool and the grinding wheel to perform additional movements in the direction of the Z- and X-axes so as to compensate for those deviations from the preselected movement which are due to turning of the grinding wheel about the B-axis.

Method of dressing grinding wheels in grinding machines

A grinding wheel with a working surface having a complex profile is subjected to a path-controlled dressing operation by an apparatus which moves in the direction of the Z-axis of the machine while the grinding wheel moves in the direction of the X-axis. When necessary in view of configuration of the momentarily dressed portion of the working surface, the grinding wheel is turned about the B-axis of the machine, and such axis is remote from the point of contact between the dressing tool and the working surface and is normal to the Z- and X-axes. The controls of the grinding machine cause the dressing tool and the grinding wheel to perform additional movements in the direction of the Z- and X-axes so as to compensate for those deviations from the preselected movement which are due to turning of the grinding wheel about the B-axis. The controls include an interpolator which modifies signals from the numerical controls of the machine and transmits modified signals to regulators for motors which initiate movements of the dressing tool in the direction of the Z-axis, movements of the grinding wheel in the direction of the X-axis, and (when necessary) turning of the grinding wheel about the B-axis.

Grinding machine with dressing apparatus and method of dressing grinding

The surface of a rotating cylindrical workpiece is monitored by an optical testing unit while the workpiece rotates and is treated by the grinding wheel in a circular grinding machine. The optical testing unit is mounted in part on one sensor of a second testing unit which monitors the diameter of the surface of the workpiece. A transducer and a light source of the optical testing unit are remote from the one sensor and are connected by fiber optic conductors with a head which is recessed into the one sensor and focuses light upon the surface of the rotating workpiece and intercepts light which is reflected by the workpiece. Lubricant which coats the surface of the workpiece in the course of the grinding operation is blown away from such surface in the region where the light beam is focused upon the workpiece.

Apparatus for optically monitoring the surface finish of ground

The work supporting unit or units on the stationary or reciprocable work supporting table of a plain grinding machine are adjustable with reference to the table by one of the existing numerically controlled drives, such as the drive which reciprocates the table with reference to a stationary base or the drive which reciprocates a carriage for the grinding wheel relative to a stationary table. The locking device or devices which normally fix the adjustable unit or units to the table are disengaged and the unit or units are separably coupled to the reciprocable part (table or carriage) by suitable detents which can be engaged or disengaged by numerically controlled drives or by an existing drive such as the drive for a slide which is reciprocably mounted on the reciprocable carriage and supports the grinding wheel.

Method and apparatus for positioning work supporting units in grinding

A plain grinding machine wherein the gauges which are used to monitor the diameter and the axial position of a workpiece constitute a unitary apparatus with one or two first sensors which can be moved linearly at right angles to the axis of the workpiece which is mounted in the machine tool and a second sensor which is pivotable about an axis extending at right angles to the axis of the workpiece in response to engagement with a shoulder on the workpiece. The second sensor can constitute one of the first sensors and the sensors can cause the generation of appropriate signals, denoting the diameter and the axial position of the workpiece, by a single signal generating measuring unit or by two discrete units.
