The invention is directed to a stereoscopic endoscope wherein an intermediate image is generated in a rod-shaped endoscope attachment. The intermediate image is imaged into the focal plane of an objective. The objective can be the main objective of a surgical microscope with the objective having a long focal length or the main objective of a stereoscopic recording system. The main objective and an in-coupling optic conjointly define an inverted telescope.

An illuminating device for an operation microscope having a light source including a light guide with a light-exit surface centered on an illumination optical axis. An optical system is arranged on this axis between the light-exit surface and the main objective of the operation microscope, and the optical system comprises a converging lens, an aspheric lens and a variable-aperture diaphragm. This optical system is displaceable in the direction of its axis, and this displacement is coordinated with aperture setting of the diaphragm. The light-exit surface of the light guide is so positioned with respect to the optical system and with respect to the main objective as to illuminate the operation field with requisite size and light-distribution.

A microscope having two optomechanically coupled observation barrels to permit simultaneous use by two individuals. While each barrel is provided with its own eyepieces and its own magnification system, they share a common optical axis including a single objective lens and a specially designed composite prism which allows part of the observation beam (the light reflected by the object) to pass through it, undiminished, to one of the observation barrels, while the other part of this light is deflected to the other observation barrel by a mirror layer within the prism. In an operation microscope, an illumination beam or ray is projected from a lateral position toward the main optical axis or observation axis, to intersect the observation axis at a point below the main objective of the microscope. At this point of intersection, a beam splitter element (plate or cube) reflects the illumination beam downwardly along the observation axis, toward the object or specimen being examined, while allowing the observation rays to pass along the observation axis. This allows the object to be examined under truly coaxial illumination, which is especially useful for certain types of examination or operation upon the eye. The beam splitter and other parts may be mounted in a housing which may be swung aside when coaxial illumination is not wanted. In a disclosed variation, provision is made for combined coaxial and oblique illumination of the object.
