A processing device embodied in an integrated circuit may be divided into first and second functional units. A mount for the integrated circuit may be assigned to the first functional unit, which may define the external electrical connections of the processing device. Processing may take place in a second functional unit of the processing device, whose essential connections may normally be accessible from the outside via the external connections of the first functional unit. The processor device having first and second functional units in a mount may be similar to a hybrid circuit but may serve a different purpose. The first functional unit, which may also comprise more than one monolithic integrated circuit, may define the external connections and may make available suitable matching circuits for the second functional unit. In this manner, the processing device, which may be contained in the second functional unit and may also comprise more than one monolithic integrated circuit, may be considered to be 'masked' as viewed from the outside. In addition to the matching circuits, the first functional unit may contain subcircuits performing more general functions, such as oscillators, supply voltage regulator circuits, buffer circuits, protective circuits, etc.

Mount for a programmable electronic processing device

A system for exchanging data includes at least two memory units, each unit functioning as both a transmitter and a receiver of data. The exchange of data occurs whenever at least two memory units are within a certain distance of each other. The user is thus capable of simultaneously being both a transmitter and a receiver of data, such that the transmitter can send data continuously but can receive data transmitted from other memory units only when the receiver is within a certain distance from a transmitter. As a result, data are received only by those memory units that are located in the immediate environment of the transmitter. Since the data transmitted can be selected personally by the user, the data thus reflects the preferences of the user acting as the transmitter.

Method and device for the exchange of data

A process is provided for the intracellular manipulation of a biological cell () which is positioned adhering to a support area () in a culture medium (). Inside the support area () for the cell () an opening into the membrane of the cell () is created spaced from its support edge. The edge of the cell membrane surrounding the opening, adhering to the support area (), thus seals off the cell fluid situated in the interior of the cell () from the culture medium () and insulates the cell fluid against the culture medium (). The interior of the cell () is manipulated through the opening. An apparatus for implementing the process is also provided, including an object carrier () with a support area () for adhering the cell and a poration tool () for creating the opening in the cell membrane. The poration tool () may be any of various chemical, mechanical and/or electrical devices.

Receptacle for a programmable, electronic processing device

The invention relates to a method for producing an optical transmitting and receiving device () comprising a light emitting transmission element () and a receiving element () which converts this light into an electrical magnitude. The transmission and receiving elements are inserted into a silicon substrate. The optical transmitting and receiving device () is preferably inserted in a monolithic manner into a common substrate, comprising a sequence of superimposed layers for the light emitting transmission element () and the light receiving element (). An electrically insulating intermediate layer () is incorporated between the transmission and receiving element.

Method for producing an optical transmitting and receiving device and a transmitting and receiving device produced according to said method

The invention relates to a capacitive magnetic field sensor. This sensor has a first electrode ( ) and a second electrode ( ), which are spaced apart from one another and which form a measurement capacitance. The first electrode ( ) is situated on a first substrate body ( ), and the second electrode ( ) on a second substrate body ( ). The second substrate body ( ) is designed as a deformable membrane in the vicinity of the second electrode ( ). A magnetic body ( ) is situated in the vicinity of the second electrode ( ) and the membrane, and is rigidly connected to the membrane and to the second electrode ( ). As a result of this rigid connection, the influence of an external magnetic field on the magnetic body causes not only the magnetic body ( ) to change its position but also causes the membrane and the second electrode ( ) to change their position, since they are rigidly connected to said magnetic body. Because the second electrode ( ) changes its position, its distance from the first electrode ( ) changes, and thus the measurement capacitance, which acts as a measure of the externally applied magnetic field. This capacitive magnetic field sensor is distinguished by very small exterior dimensions, great mechanical stability, and low temperature dependence.

Capacitive magnetic field sensor

A method is provided for measuring a state variable of a biological cell ( ) located in a nutrient medium ( ) and supported on and adhering to a support area ( ). Within the support area ( ) for the cell ( ) and at a distance from the support area edge, an opening is made in the membrane of the cell ( ). The edge of the cell membrane that surrounds the opening and adheres to the support area ( ) seals off the liquid found inside the cell ( ) from the nutrient medium ( ). Through the opening the state variable ( ) is measured. An apparatus for performing the method is also provided.

Method for intracellular manipulation of a biological cell

A capacitive sensor is described which includes a first electrode remote from a second electrode, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode form a measurement capacitance. The first electrode is arranged on a first substrate member and the second electrode is arranged on a second substrate member. At least one of the electrodes has a spatially resolved structure which allows a spatially resolved measurement of the capacitance. The spatial structure of the electrode may be implemented in form of several mutually parallel stripe-shaped elements or in form of a plurality of spaced-apart elements that are arranged in a two-dimensional pattern. Associated with the electrodes are electronic processing units integrated in the substrate members.

The opposing contacts ( ) are each electrically connected using flip-chip connections ( ), to a contact element ( ), which are allocated to each of them. The semiconductor chip ( ) and the carrier ( ) enclose a measuring chamber. Between the carrier ( ) and the semiconductor chip ( ) a seal ( ) is arranged, which is constructed to be porous or semi-porous, at least in certain areas, or is constructed as a selectively permeable membrane, for bringing a substance into the measuring chamber.

Measuring device

A device ( ) serves for conducting investigations on cell specimens, wherein the device has a microtiter plate or similar receiving device with a plurality of individual containers for the cell specimens. Furthermore, a measuring facility for recording changes in individual specimens is provided. On the underside the microtiter plate or similar receiving device has a measuring structure which carries at least one sensor allocated to each receiving vessel. The measuring structure can either be combined with a bottomless upper part of a conventional microtiter plate, or instead it is a semiconductor substrate plate ( ) with a plurality of bowl-shaped receptacle depressions ( ) situated therein and provided as containers. At least one sensor is allocated to each depression.

Device for conducting research on cell specimens and similar materials

A capacitive sensor including a first electrode and a second electrode which are disposed opposite each other in spaced-apart relationship to form a capacitor, the first electrode being disposed on a first substrate and the second electrode on a second substrate, the substrates being joined together at the sides of the electrodes, and the second substrate forming, in the area of the second electrode, a diaphragm deformable by pressure. An electronic signal processing device for processing the measurement signals is incorporated in one of the substrates below the electrode disposed thereon.

Method and apparatus for measuring a state variable
