The disclosure relates to the production of a mineral fiber product for example to replace asbestos fibers in different products. In the method of production, at most 7% by weight of mineral fibers is dispersed in water which contains a wetting agent, undispersible material being then separated and the dispersion being then mechanically dewatered to a dry content of from 30 to 70% by weight and a fiber density of from 200 to 400 kg/m.sup.3. In a subsequent, separate stage, the fibers are redispersed in water substantially without the addition of wetting agent, are provided with possible additives such as cellulose fibers, are shaped, dewatered and dried.

Method of producing a mineral fiber product

A method is provided for improving the uniformity of the surface weight of a mineral wool mat. The mat is produced from a mineral melt which is converted into fibers, these fibers being introduced into a gas-formed stream providing a transport medium for these fibers. The transport medium and the mineral fibers carried thereby are transported to a moveable collector band on one side of which the mineral wool is deposited so as to form the mineral wool mat, the transport medium being caused to pass through the collector band by means of a fan or the like. The method comprises measuring at least one variable which is characteristic of the transport medium and which varies in relationship to the amount of mineral wool deposited. Examples of such a variable include the pressure drop across the transport medium when passing through the mineral wool mat, the rise in temperature of the transport medium due to heat transfer from the mineral material, and the power supplied to the fan which provides movement of the transport medium. The results of the measuring step are fed to a control device for controlling the speed of movement of the collector band such that the speed of the collector band is varied in direct relationship to the amount of fiber deposited on the collector band, i.e., the greater the amount of fiber, the greater the speed, whereby the mineral fiber material is deposited on the collector band with an evenly distributed surface weight.

Method for determining the surface weight of a mineral wool mat

A sample of mineral fibers is dispersed in a liquid and viscosity of the dispersion is measured. The viscosity value provides a rapid measure of the length of the fibers. The measurement is sufficiently rapid that adjustments can be made to operating conditions during a production run to ensure the production of fibers of uniform length characteristics.

A method is provided for controlling the surface weight of a mineral wool mat in a process in which fibers of mineral wool are produced by spinning a mineral melt and the mineral wool formed from the fibers is transferred to a collection device using a stream of gas which is separated from the mineral wool in the collection device, the mineral wool forming a mat on a collection band. The method concerns measuring at least two variables which influence the amount of mineral wool formed per unit time and predicting, based on these measurements, the production of mineral wool at a predetermined future point in time. The surface weight of the mineral wool mat is measured along with the speed of the collection band and these quantities are used to determine the actual amount of mineral wool produced at the predetermined time. The values corresponding to the actual and predicted amounts are compared to determine the error in the latter and this information together with updated measurements of the two variables is used to make a new prediction.

Method for control of the surface weight of a mineral wool mat

A method for the manufacture of a sheet containing mineral fibers and binder. An aqueous suspension containing fibers and binder is formed into a layer. The layer is de-watered to form a wet sheet. Additional binder is applied evenly to the entire surface of the de-watered sheet. The sheet is then dried. The sheet may be compressed to an extent of 20% during drying.

A method for producing shaped bodies of fibrous materials using mineral fibers, cellulosic fibers, and zero fibers. The zero fibers are extremely thin and short cellulosic fibers produced either synthetically or from natural by-products from the cellulose industry. These bodies can be used as substitutes for asbestos fiber products, and display physical properties, such as resistance and rigidity, comparable to the asbestos products. The fibrous materials are produced using an aqueous dispersion of the mineral fibers, cellulose fibers, and zero fibers, whereafter the dispersion is de-watered, shaped and dried.

Apparatus for manufacturing mineral fibers from a mineral melt. Two groups of spinner wheels are arranged symmetrically with respect to each other. Each group includes a primary spinner wheel which receives molten mineral and a secondary spinner wheel to which material is transferred from the primary spinner wheel. The wheels in each group are rotated on horizontal axes in opposite directions and the secondary spinner wheels are rotated in a direction such that at the place where they are closest to one another, the peripheral motion of each is upward. An air stream is directed horizontally and generally axially of the spinner wheels such that it sweeps over the peripheral surfaces of the spinner wheels for transferring fibers to a fiber collection surface.
