Systems and methods for providing high-throughput and reliable operation in WiFi and cellular environments stem in antenna volume-constrained devices employs a switched or multiplexed cellular band antenna to support WiFi MIMO for mobile handheld operation. The device housing may a single, unitary metallic piece having the device antennas formed as part of the housing. Alternatively, one or more antennas may be internal to the device.

RF-antenna architecture in mobile communication devices

The present application provides an antenna system for use in an electronic device. The antenna system includes a conductive housing for the electronic device having a perimeter, which extends around the device. The conductive housing has a plurality of arms formed in the conductive housing at or near the perimeter. The antenna system further includes a conductive substrate, coupled to the conductive housing and located within the perimeter of the conductive housing. The conductive substrate has a notch located proximate the position of one of the plurality of arms in the conductive housing, where each of the plurality of arms respectively couples to the conductive substrate proximate the perimeter, and where the notch causes one of the plurality of arms to couple to the conductive substrate at a point having a different relative distance along the length of the perimeter of the conductive housing. The antenna system still further includes a plurality of signal sources, respectively coupled between the conductive substrate and a corresponding one of the plurality of arms. In at least some or other embodiments a selectable shunt circuit can be used to affect the polarization of the wireless signals associated with one or more of the antenna arms.

Systems and methods for providing resonant wireless charging in a portable communications device utilize antenna arms formed from openings in a metal unibody construction. Two of the antenna arms are driven by WiFi, GPS, and cellular drives respectively, while a wireless charging antenna sharing the same mechanical connections provides a differential drive across the antenna ends, forming a primary wireless charging coil. In an embodiment, a smaller multi-turn coil is connected to the primary wireless charging coil, and may overlay a device speaker and may also be shielded by a ferrite material. This structure or a dedicated similar structure on the device is then used for resonance-based wireless charging of the device.

Systems and methods for providing NFC (near field communications) in a portable communications device utilize antenna arms formed from openings in a metal unibody construction. Two of the antenna arms are driven by WiFi and cellular drives respectively, while an NFC antenna drive sharing the same mechanical connections provides a differential drive across the antenna ends, forming a primary NFC coil. In an embodiment, a smaller multi-turn coil is connected to the primary NFC coil, and may overlay a device speaker and may also be shielded by a ferrite material.

A wireless charging apparatus can include an exciter that initiates and shapes electromagnetic fields of microwave frequency. The exciter can include a ground structure and a feed structure disposed within the ground structure. The wireless charging apparatus can also include an adapter configured to hold a device to be charged with a side of the device to be charged exposed external to the apparatus while charging the device to be charged. The adapter can transmit the microwave power from the exciter to the device to be charged.

An enhanced portable communication device includes a one-piece metal back plate with integral antennas. The one-piece metal back plate includes four integral antennas in an embodiment, forming an antenna pair at each end of the device. A printed circuit board (PCB) of the device is configured to drive one or more of the antennas capacitivly or, in an embodiment, via a direct feed.

The present application provides a housing for an electronic device having wireless communication capabilities including an antenna incorporated as part of the housing. The housing includes a one piece conductive housing having an outer edge. One or more windows are located entirely within the one piece conductive housing, where each of the one or more windows has a perimeter. At least a first window of the one or more windows is positioned within the one piece conductive housing proximate a portion of the outer edge of the one piece conductive housing. At least one drive signal is applied across the first window of the one or more windows, which is positioned proximate the outer edge of the one piece conductive housing, at a respective pair of points along the perimeter of the first window.
