A writing instrument has a supply chamber connected to reserve chamber by a refilling valve actuated by a plunger which is controlled by a push button formed with a self-closing membrane type valve through which the reserve chamber can be filled from a receptacle by a hollow needle. A separating valve at the end of the plunger closes before the refilling valve is opened to ensure that no ink under pressure will be forced into the ink flow regulator and point of the instrument during the refilling process.

An applicator for a film carried on a tape has a housing having a main part and a cover part that normally fit complementarily together. A supply spool on which the tape carrying the film is wound is rotatable in the main housing part. A takeup spool onto which the tape is wound is rotatable in the main housing part adjacent the supply spool. A slide is displaceable longitudinally in the housing between a retracted inner end position relatively close to the spools and an extended outer end position relatively far from the spools and projecting from the housing. The tape is spanned over an applicator foot fixed on and displaceable with the slide. Structure on the housing releasably retains the foot and slide in the front extended position. The spools can be replaced by removing the housing cover part and then pushing the foot back into the inner end position, thereby taking all tension off the tape. The two spools are then removed and a new set of spools joined by a new tape are set in place. The new tape is hooked over the retracted foot and same is pushed into the outer end position, thereby tensioning the tape. The cover part is reinstalled and the reloading is complete.

Easy-load film applicator

A cartridge for a film applicator has a body having parallel and spaced upper and lower end walls formed with respective upper and lower coaxial holes, a supply spool having a core ring and sandwiched between the end walls coaxial with the holes, a takeup spool, and holding formations on the body releasably securing the takeup spool underneath the lower end wall coaxial with the holes and supply spool so that the spools axially flank the lower end wall. A guide extends parallel to the hole axis through the lower wall and the guide, supply spool, and body are made of substantially the same material. A supply of tape has an outer end fixed to the takeup spool and an inner end and forms a loop having an upper leg engaging the guide between the end walls and a lower leg engaging the guide below the lower end wall The inner end of the tape is releasably secured to the supply spool so it can be separated therefrom with very little force, and a pair of spaced arms unitarily formed with the body hold the loop.

Cartridge for hand-operated film applicator

A dispenser for a tape having a sticky side has a housing adapted to hold a supply of the tape and a roller rotatable on the housing about an axis and having a mainly cylindrical outer surface projecting radially past the housing. The tape passes partially around the roller with its sticky side turned radially away from the roller and engaging a central portion of the roller surface so that the tape can be pressed by the roller against a substrate to adhere the tape to the substrate and to inwardly deflect the central portion of the roller surface. Elements axially flanking the roller permit deflection of the roller surface in contact with the tape inward until the elements contact the surface and prevent further inward deflection of the central portion of the roller surface even if the elements are pressed with greater force against the substrate.

A double-ended pen has a pair of elongated liquid-holding reservoirs each having a rear end, a front end having a liquid-applying tip, an intermediate portion between the ends and having at the rear end a predetermined relatively small outside diameter, and a snap-type retaining formation. An intermediate coupling sleeve has a pair of oppositely open seats each receiving a respective one of the rear ends and provided with formations for retaining the respective rear ends securely against axial displacement. The sleeve also has a pair of axially opposite ends having axially oppositely directed end surfaces each having a portion extending at an acute angle to a plane perpendicular to the axis. The sleeve ends are of a diameter greater than the outside diameter of the intermediate portions and projecting radially therepast when the respective rear ends are fitted in the seats. A pair of respective caps each adapted to fit over a respective one of the reservoirs each have a rear end substantially of the same diameter as the respective rear end of the sleeve and having an end surface with a surface portion complementary to the inclined portion of the respective sleeve end surface and engageable flush and complementarily therewith in a mounted position of the cap on the respective reservoir. Each cap further has an internal snap-type retaining formation complementary to and engaged with the snap-type retaining formation of the respective reservoir in the mounted position of the cap.

Double-ended pen

The cap for the writing instrument comprises a jacket mounted slidably on a sealing insert or sleeve which provides a sealed moisture chamber for the writing tip when the cap is on the writing instrument. Near the writing tip there is a circular bulge on the shaft of the writing instrument which enters into a sealing engagement with an interior passage of the sealing insert. On putting the cap on the writing instrument the sealing insert is pushed over the circular bulge until it contacts a contacting stop on the jacket. Then the circular bulge presses tightly into the sealing insert and it locks the jacket to the writing instrument so that the entire arrangement is kept in that position until the cap is removed. A signal slider is attached with the sealing insert which is extendable out from the end of the jacket in order to signal in its extended position the proper seating of the cap on the writing instrument. Erroneous indications of a sealed state are prevented with our invention.
