Systems and methods for driving an accessory of a vehicle. The system includes a power take-off (PTO) device, a mechanically driven accessory, a battery, and power conversion circuitry electrically connected to the battery. The system also includes a first electric motor mechanically coupled to the PTO device and a second electric motor mechanically coupled to the mechanically driven accessory. The system further includes an engageable mechanical connector that, when engaged, mechanically couples the PTO device and the mechanically driven accessory. The system performs operations including engaging the engageable mechanical connector when a speed of the PTO device is within a predetermined speed range; disengaging the engageable mechanical connector when the speed of the PTO device is outside the predetermined speed range; and based on disengaging the engageable mechanical connector, providing electric power to the second electric motor to generate and transfer mechanical energy to the mechanically driven accessory.

Systems and methods for reducing efficiency losses associated with powering vehicle accessories

Methods of improving SCR performance in heavy duty vehicles may use multiple interdependent control techniques to increase engine exhaust temperatures in a fuel efficient manner. One method combines cylinder deactivation and mechanical loading of an engine by an electrical generator used to input energy into an exhaust stream to manipulate the exhaust temperature through the combined effect of modified air-to-fuel ratio and supplemental energy input. In particular, cylinder deactivation may be used to modify the engine air flowrate and the electric generator may be used to apply mechanical load on the engine to manipulate the engine fuel flow rate to control the engine air-to-fuel ratio and thereby increase exhaust temperatures. The exhaust temperatures may be further increased by using the electrical generator to add the energy generated as input energy to the exhaust stream.

A disclosed method of automatically stopping and restarting a vehicle engine determines if one or more stop/start enablement condition has been met. If the stop/start enablement condition or conditions have been met, the method initiates an engine shutdown. If a restart request is made when the engine speed is less than the predetermined threshold speed but still greater than 0, then a second restart sequence is initiated.

In some embodiments of the present disclosure, these sensors can also predict a need for power and/or an end of a coast opportunity. These predictions can allow the vehicle to automatically enter a coasting state, and can predictively re-engage the engine and/or powertrain in order to make power available with no delay when desired by the operator.

Systems and methods for heating and cooling a vehicle are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method for heating and cooling the vehicle includes: running a compressor of an air-conditioning system; and sensing the temperature inside the cab of the vehicle. The method further includes, closing a path of refrigerant to the compressor by a solenoid valve, pumping-down refrigerant by the compressor, and deactivating the compressor when a lower set point of the temperature inside the cab is reached. The method also includes opening the path of refrigerant to the compressor by a solenoid valve, sensing pressure of refrigerant at an inlet of the compressor by a pressure sensor, and activating the compressor based on a signal from the pressure sensor when an upper set point of temperature inside cab is reached.

In some embodiments of the present disclosure, an electric motor is used to generate correction torques to counteract unwanted torque pulses generated by an internal combustion engine during a cylinder deactivation mode. In some embodiments, the electric motor may be mounted to an accessory drive such as a power take-off mechanism or a front end accessory drive (FEAD). In some embodiments, the correction torques may be determined using an engine model. The correction torques help to reduce or eliminate noise, vibration, and/or harshness (NVH) during the cylinder deactivation mode.
