A system and method for beamforming includes providing an antenna including feeds, a coverage area including service areas and data streams for each of the service areas; selecting a cluster of M feeds from the feeds; computing, with a GBBF processor (ground based beam former), M&#xd7;N weights; generating M feed excitations by distributing the N data streams per the M&#xd7;N weights; switching an array to transfer a respective one of the M feed excitations to a respective one of the M feeds; and beamforming, with the M feeds of the antenna, N beams. In the method, the N beams are each focused on a respective service area of each of the N data streams, the M&#xd7;N weights improve the transmitting into the respective service area of each of the N data streams, and at least one of the N beams includes a portion of a plurality of the M feed excitations.

Ground based beam forming with clustering

A system and method for beamforming includes providing an antenna including feeds, a coverage area including service areas and data streams for each of the service areas; scheduling N data streams of the data streams, selecting a cluster of M feeds from the feeds; computing, with a GBBF processor (ground based beam former), M&#xd7;N weights; generating M feed excitations by distributing the N data streams per the M&#xd7;N weights; switching an array to transfer a respective one of the M feed excitations to a respective one of the M feeds; and beamforming, with the M feeds of the antenna, N beams. A system and method for timing synchronization of satellite switching instants with gateway switching instants is described. The method includes: generating satellite switching instants according to a Beam Hopping Time Plan (BHTP); generating gateway switching instants according to the BHTP; transmitting a channel addressed to a plurality of beams hopped according to the BHTP based on the gateway switching instants, wherein each of the plurality of beams includes a signal including timing markers and a guard period at an end of the signal for the respective beam; receiving a synchronization information, without a loopback beam, for one of the plurality of beams; determining an adjustment period and an adjusted symbol rate for the generating of the gateway switching instants, based on the synchronization information, for a transmission of the channel such that at least a portion of the guard period in a respective signal for a respective beam aligns with one of the satellite switching instants; and adjusting a timing and a symbol rate of the transmission according to the adjustment period and the adjusted symbol rate, respectively.

Timing synchronization for a beam hopping satellite

A network node includes a processor programmed to parse at least a portion of an input block having a plurality of segments, determine whether at least one of the plurality of segments matches a segment stored in a history buffer, and predict a compressibility of the input block based at least in part on whether at least one of the plurality of segments matches a segment stored in the history buffer.

Compressibility estimation for lossless data compression

Dynamic history multistream long range compression (DHC) techniques are described for efficiently compressing multiple, prioritized data streams received over a channel. A history buffer is associated with each received stream and a DHC compressor dynamically allocates fixed sized history sections to and from each history buffer. In implementations, the DHC compressor makes stream history size adjustments prior to compressing a block of data and sends information identifying the change in history size to a DHC decompressor. The DHC decompressor sends signaling information to the DHC compressor that is used to ensure that the DHC decompressor can operate with a fixed amount of total history memory.

Dynamic history multistream long range compression

A system and method for timing synchronization with a modified DVB-S2X waveform for a forward beam hopping satellite is described. The method includes: transmitting a channel including a plurality of beams per a Beam Hopping Time Plan (BHTP), wherein each beam includes a discontinuous signal including a superframe including timing markers and a Beam Hopping Forward Synchronization Pattern (BHFSP); receiving a synchronization information, without a loopback beam, for one of the plurality of beams; determining an adjustment period and an adjusted symbol rate for generation of terrestrial switching instants, based on the synchronization information, for a transmission of the plurality of beams such that at least a portion of a respective BHFSP of one of the beams aligns with one of satellite switching instants; and adjusting a timing and symbol rate of the transmission according to the adjustment period and the adjusted symbol rate, respectively.

Timing synchronization with a modified DVB-S2X waveform for a beam hopping satellite

A receive planar phased array antenna on a communications platform is used to estimate a pointing error of the antenna and to orient the antenna boresight towards the transmitter. A method for orienting the communications antenna includes: segmenting a receive phase array antenna into N sub-arrays with M-antenna elements in each sub-array; receiving, a known signal, by each of the M-antenna elements of at least four (4) of the N-sub-arrays; scanning in a direction of the known signal by applying a beam weight associated with each of the M elements in each of the at least 4-sub-arrays to obtain M-weighted signals for each of the at least 4-sub-arrays; combining the M-weighted signals for each of the at least 4-sub-arrays into signals A, B, C and D, respectively; generating an azimuth difference signal per a weighted sum of (A+B) and (C+D) and an elevation difference signal per a weighted sum of (A+C) and (B+D); computing the weights of the azimuth difference signal, such that the azimuth difference signals is driven to a zero signal; and computing the weights of the elevation difference signal, such that the elevation difference signal is driven to a zero signal.
