In certain aspects, a method implemented in a wireless device includes determining a specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution for a first wireless communication technology, determining a power density (PD) distribution for a second wireless communication technology, and combining the SAR distribution and the PD distribution to generate a combined RF exposure distribution. The method also includes determining at least one first maximum allowable power level and at least one second maximum allowable power level for a future time slot based on the combined RF exposure distribution, setting at least one transmission power limit for a first transmitter in the future time slot based on the at least one first maximum allowable power level, and setting at least one transmission power limit for a second transmitter in the future time slot based on the at least one second maximum allowable power level.

Evaluating radio frequency (RF) exposure in real time

Some disclosed devices include an inertial sensor system, a proximity sensor system, an antenna system configured to transmit and receive radio signals and a control system. The control system may be configured for receiving inertial sensor data from the inertial sensor system and controlling the proximity sensor system and/or the antenna system based, at least in part, on the inertial sensor data. In some examples, the control system may be configured for controlling the proximity sensor system and/or the antenna system based, at least in part, on whether the inertial sensor data indicates that the device is being held, is being carried or is on a person's body (e.g., is in the person's pocket).

Enhanced radio wave exposure mitigation using a combination of proximity and inertial sensor data

Aspects described herein include methods and devices for radar integration with a mmW communication module. In some aspects, an apparatus is provided that includes a millimeter wave (mmW) printed circuit board (PCB), with first and second mmW elements, and a radar antenna. The first mmW element is coupled to a first side of the mmW PCB, where the first mmW element is configured for wireless mmW communications at frequencies above approximately 24 gigahertz (GHz). A second mmW element coupled to the first side of the mmW PCB, where the second mmW element is positioned adjacent to the first mmW element and is separated from the first mmW element by a gap spacing. A radar antenna is disposed in the mmW PCB and aligned with the gap spacing between the first mmW element and the second mmW element.

An apparatus is disclosed for proximity detection using multiple power levels. In an example aspect, the apparatus includes a first antenna, a second antenna, and a wireless transceiver coupled to the first antenna and the second antenna. The wireless transceiver is configured to transmit multiple transmit signals at multiple power levels via the first antenna. The wireless transceiver is also configured to receive multiple receive signals via the second antenna. At least one receive signal of the multiple receive signals includes a portion of at least one transmit signal of the multiple transmit signals that is reflected by an object. The wireless transceiver is additionally configured to adjust a transmission parameter based on the at least one receive signal. The transmission parameter varies according to a range to the object.

Proximity detection using multiple power levels

Methods and apparatus for distinguishing between an antenna of a user equipment (UE) being blocked by a cover (e.g., a protective rubber or plastic case) or by human tissue (e.g., a finger or palm). The transmission power of uplink (UL) signals may be adjusted accordingly, with relatively higher transmission power for open space or a cover and relatively lower transmission power for human tissue. One example method for wireless communications by a UE generally includes transmitting a first signal from the UE, receiving a plurality of signals at the UE based on the transmitted first signal, determining values for at least two different types of parameters based on the received plurality of signals, determining an environmental scenario for the UE based on the values for the at least two different types of parameters, and transmitting a second signal using a transmission power based on the determined environmental scenario.

Methods and apparatus for user equipment to differentiate human grip from protective covers

A method for wireless communication performed by a head-mounted user equipment (UE), the method includes determining a first spatial relationship between an eye of a human user of the head-mounted UE and physical transmission and reception ports of the head-mounted UE; based on the first spatial relationship, determining a second spatial relationship between a plurality of radio frequency (RF) beam directions of the head-mounted UE and the eye of the human user; selecting a first RF beam direction from among the plurality of RF beam directions based at least in part on the second spatial relationship with respect to the first RF beam direction; and transmitting or receiving RF radiation using a first RF beam conforming to the first RF beam direction.

Wireless communication techniques employing beamforming based on spatial relationship to human tissue

In an aspect of the disclosure, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided. In certain configurations, the apparatus may be a user equipment (UE). The apparatus may receive configuration information for UL and DL transmissions from another device such as a base station. The apparatus may determine a maximum duty cycle of the UL transmission based on the configuration information. Based on the determined UL maximum duty cycle, the apparatus may determine a transmit power limit for the UL transmission. In one aspect, the apparatus may determine the UL transmit power limit by dividing the power corresponding to a maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit by the determined maximum UL duty cycle. The apparatus may leverage the forward knowledge of the UL duty cycle to transmit at a power level that complies with the MPE limit while avoiding the poor uplink range associated with static power back-off.

Methods for maximum permissible exposure mitigation based on new radio time domain duplex configuration

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide object detection based on perturbations in a channel model over time. An example portable apparatus includes a primary antenna, a secondary antenna, a transmit path, a radio frequency (RF) coupler, and a receive path. The transmit path is coupled to the primary antenna and configured to output a transmit signal for transmission via the primary antenna. The RF coupler is coupled to the secondary antenna. The receive path has an input selectively coupled between the transmit path and the RF coupler such that when the receive path is coupled to the RF coupler and configured to operate concurrently with the transmit path, the receive path is configured to receive a reflected portion of the transmit signal from an object located in proximity to the portable apparatus.

An apparatus including a housing; sensors configured to sense one or more locations upon which a user is gripping the housing; sensors including antenna modules configured to transmit a signal based on the one or more locations upon which the user is gripping the housing. Another aspect relates to an apparatus including a housing; a set of antenna modules situated proximate at different surface locations along the housing; and a controller configured to operate the set of antenna modules to determine at least one or more electromagnetic leakage coupling between at least one pair of antenna modules of the set. In this aspect, the controller may be configured to select one or more of the set of antenna modules for transmitting a signal based on the one or more electromagnetic leakage coupling associated with one or more of the different locations where a user grips the housing, respectively.

Apparatus and method for detecting device grip

Aspects relate to a calibration of an antenna array module of a wireless communication device in open space. The antenna array module may be used as a proximity sensor to detect an object's proximity relative to the antenna array module. Aspects include displaying an open space calibration instruction on a display of the wireless communication device, transmitting a proximity test signal from the antenna array module, measuring a value of a first signal received at the antenna array module in response to transmitting the proximity test signal, and storing the value of the first signal as an open space calibration value of the antenna array module. The first signal may be measured at cross-polarized antennas of the antenna array module. The value of the first signal may be representative of perturbations of the proximity test signal at the cross-polarized antennas.

Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for determining one or more attributes of at least one target based on eigenspace analysis of radar signals are presented. In some embodiments, a subset of eigenvectors to use for forming a signal or noise subspace is identified based on principal component analysis. In some embodiments, the subset of eigenvectors is identified based on estimating the total number of targets using a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or other spectral analysis technique. In some embodiments, a DFT is used to identify areas of interest in which to perform eigenspace analysis. In some embodiments, a DFT is used to estimate one attribute of a target, and eigenspace analysis is performed to estimate a different attribute of the target, with the results being combined to generate a multi-dimensional representation of a field of view.
