Technologies directed to a wireless network with a cascaded star topology with multiple devices at multiples nodes are described. In one wireless network, multiple devices are manufactured as a common device type and deployed at different nodes of the wireless network. The devices are configured to operate as a base station (BS) role, a gateway (GW) role, a relay (RL) role, or a customer station (STA) role. The nodes can be a base station node (BSN), a relay node (RLN), or a customer premises equipment (CPE) node. One node can be a first-tier hub of the cascaded star topology and another node can be a second-tier hub of the cascaded star topology.

Scalable network architecture

Technologies directed to sectorized analog beam searching are described. One method includes a first wireless device receiving a first destination address of a second wireless device, a first angle value corresponding to a first direction, and a second angle value corresponding to a second direction. The first wireless device generates a first signal beam transmitted in the first direction and spanning a first geographic region and receives an RSSI value corresponding to the first signal beam. The first wireless generates a second signal beam transmitted in the second direction and spanning a second geographic region and receives a second RSSI value corresponding to the second signal beam. The first wireless device determines that the first RSSI value is greater than the second RSSI value. The first wireless device determines, using a third signal beam a third angle value corresponding to a third direction located within the first geographic region.

Sectorized analog beam search system

Technologies directed to reducing wireless earbud form factor and cost without compromising antenna performance are described. One wireless earbud includes a metal element that is a hybrid radiating element, touch element, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) trap. The metal element can include a first section coupled to a first ESD element, a second section that can include a circular element, and a third section coupled to a second ESD element. The wireless earbud can include touch circuitry coupled to the metal element to detect a presence of a conductive object in proximity to the metal element. The wireless earbud can include a radio that is parasitically coupled to the metal element and configured to apply a radio frequency signal to parasitically induce a current on the metal element that causes the metal element to radiate electromagnetic energy as a parasitic monopole element.

Antenna architecture and design for miniaturized ear-worn devices

Technologies directed to coordinated dynamic analog beamforming are described. One method includes receiving, by a digital controller of a first wireless device, a data packet, the data packet comprising a destination address of a second wireless device. The method further includes retrieving, from memory, beamformer configuration data associated with the destination address, the beamformer configuration data comprising a phase shifter angle value for a radiation pattern. The method sends, to a beamformer circuit, the phase shifter angle value, the beamformer circuit comprises a power splitter and a set of phase shifters (e.g., at least four). The method causes the set of phase shifters to steer the radiation pattern of electromagnetic energy, radiated by an antenna array of elements, at the phase shifter angle value and sends the data packet to the second wireless device via the antenna array.

Coordinated dynamic analog beamformer

Technologies for wireless network devices with surface-link antenna systems mounted on exterior surfaces of buildings are described. One wireless network device includes a housing with a circuit board and a first antenna port. A processor, a first antenna, a first wireless local area network (WLAN) radio, and a second WLAN radio are disposed on the circuit board. The first WLAN radio communicates with a radio of a client device using the first antenna over a first line-of-sight (LOS) or non-LOS wireless link (e.g., 2.4 GHz) inside the building. The second WLAN radio communicates with a radio of a second wireless network device using the second antenna over a second LOS wireless link (e.g., 5 GHz) that is external to the building. The first antenna is located inside the building and the second antenna is located along an exterior surface of the building.

Surface-link antenna architecture

A wireless device includes a radio, a first directional antenna, a second directional antenna, an omnidirectional antenna, and a switch selectively coupled between the radio and the first directional antenna, the second directional antenna, and the omnidirectional antenna. A processor is coupled to the switch and to, for a frame: determine, based on an arbitration table, a destination medium access control address of a client wireless device and identifiers of antennas for transmitting the frame and receiving acknowledgement data; cause the switch to couple the radio to the first directional antenna; transmit the frame to the client wireless device via the first directional antenna, wherein the first client wireless device is located along a first direction with respect to the wireless device; cause the switch to couple the radio to the omnidirectional antenna; and receive an acknowledgment, corresponding to the frame, from the client wireless device via the omnidirectional antenna.

Hybrid directional antenna system

An apparatus includes an elongated housing having a first plurality of sidewalls that form a first isolation chamber on a first side of the elongated housing. A first printed circuit board (PCB) includes a first patch element, wherein the PCB defines a first plane. A first parasitic element disposed in a second plane, wherein the first parasitic element is retained a predetermined distance from the first patch element in the first plane. A second PCB is disposed within the elongated housing. A first radio is disposed on the second PCB, wherein the first radio is coupled to the first patch element, and wherein the first patch element and the first parasitic element, in response to radio frequency (RF) signals from the first radio, radiate electromagnetic energy in a first direction away from the first isolation chamber.

Antenna structures of a multi-radio, multi-channel (MRMC) mesh network device

A device includes first and second directional antennas, an omnidirectional antenna, and a switch selectively coupled between the first directional and omnidirectional antennas. A first radio includes first RF circuitry. A switch selectively couples the first omnidirectional antenna or the first directional antenna to the first radio. A second radio is coupled to the second directional antenna and includes second RF circuitry. An application processor receives, from first RF circuitry, a first radio frequency performance indicator (RFPI) value for signals received over the omnidirectional antenna, a second RFPI value for signals received over the first directional antenna, and, from the second RF circuitry, a third RPI value for signals received over the second directional antenna. The application processor determines a best RFPI value, selects an antenna corresponding to the best RFPI value, and selects a radio corresponding to the selected antenna.

Intelligently-switched, concurrently-operated omnidirectional and directional antennas

Network hardware devices organized in a Wireless mesh network (WMN) in which the network hardware devices cooperate in distribution of content files to client consumption devices in an environment of limited connectivity to broadband Internet infrastructure are described. One mesh network device includes a housing including reflective chambers within with multiple antennas are disposed. A first radio is operable to cause a first antenna to radiate electromagnetic energy in a first frequency range and a first reflector chamber is operable to reflect the electromagnetic energy in a first direction away from the housing. Second, third, and fourth radios are operable to cause the respective antennas within the respective reflective chambers to radiate electromagnetic energy and the respective reflective chamber is to reflect the electromagnetic energy in a respective direction away from the housing.

Antenna structures and reflective chambers of a multi-radio, multi-channel (MRMC) mesh network device

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same of an electronic device are described. One apparatus includes a radio coupled to a RF feed and an RF switch, a first antenna element coupled to the RF feed, and a second antenna element coupled to the RF switch, the RF switch being coupled to a grounding point of a ground plane. The radio controls the RF switch between a first mode and a second mode. The radio causes the first antenna element to radiate electromagnetic energy in a first radiation pattern in the first mode and causes the second antenna element to radiate electromagnetic energy in a second radiation pattern in the second mode. The second radiation pattern is different than the first radiation pattern.

Pattern diversity assisted antenna systems

An electronic device includes a metal housing having a height greater than a width, four sides that form an inner chamber in a center thereof. Four sidewalls extend from a first back wall form a first chamber located at a first of the four sides. Four sidewalls extend from a second back wall form a second chamber located at a second of the four sides. A first antenna is disposed in the first chamber. A second antenna is disposed in the second chamber. A circuit board is disposed within the inner chamber and oriented longitudinally from a bottom of the inner chamber. A first radio is disposed on the circuit board and coupled to the first antenna. A second radio is disposed on the circuit board and coupled to the second antenna, such that the second antenna is electrically isolated from the first antenna.

Antenna structures and isolation chambers of a multi-radio, multi-channel (MRMC) mesh network device

Network hardware devices organized in a Wireless mesh network (WMN) in which the network hardware devices cooperate in distribution of content files to client consumption devices without Internet connectivity are described. One mesh network device includes a housing with a first sector defined by a first recessed region between a first reflective wall, a second reflective wall, and a third reflective wall, and a second sector defined by a second recessed region between a fourth reflective wall, a fifth reflective wall, and a sixth reflective wall. A first antenna, such as a phased array dipole antenna, is disposed inside the first recessed region. A first radio, which is coupled to the first antenna, causes the first antenna to radiate electromagnetic energy in a first frequency range and the first, the second, and the third reflective walls collectively reflect the electromagnetic energy, radiated by the first antenna, in a first direction away from the housing.

Highly isolated sector antenna for concurrent radio operation

Radio frequency (RF) front-end circuitry and methods of operating the same are described. One apparatus includes multiple antennas and a RF front-end circuitry. The RF front-end circuitry includes a first diplexer, a second diplexer, a third diplexer, a fourth diplexer, and a switch. A first transceiver is coupled to a first antenna via the first diplexer and the second diplexer. The third receiver is coupled to the first antenna via the first diplexer. The second transceiver is selectively coupled to a second antenna via the third diplexer, the switch, and the fourth diplexer when the switch is set to the first mode in response to the control signal from a processing component. The first transceiver is selectively coupled to the second antenna via the switch and the third diplexer when the switch is set to the first mode in response to the control signal from the processing component.

Radio frequency (RF) front-end circuitry for wireless local area network (WLAN), wide area network (WAN) and global positioning system (GPS) communications

Technology for a bi-directional radio frequency front-end (RFFE) architecture with high selectivity performance is described. One RFFE has a first mixer that receives a LO signal from the LO circuit and a transmit (TX) signal, having a first frequency, from a transmitter and produces a down-converted TX signal for channel bandwidth filtering, the TX signal having a second frequency that is lower than the first frequency. A programmable filter circuit, in response to a selection signal, filters the down-converted TX signal according to a selected channel bandwidth. The second mixer receives the LO signal from the LO circuit and a channel-filtered TX signal from the programmable filter circuit and produces an up-converted TX signal having the first frequency. The power amplifier amplifies the up-converted TX signal to produce an output TX signal to cause an antenna to radiate electromagnetic energy in the selected channel bandwidth.

Bi-directional radio frequency front-end (RFFE)

Network hardware devices organized in a Wireless mesh network (WMN) in which the network hardware devices cooperate in distribution of content files to client consumption devices in an environment of limited connectivity to broadband Internet infrastructure are described. One mesh network device includes a micro controller, RF radios, and antenna switching circuitry. The antenna switching circuitry, in response to the control signals from a micro controller, selectively couples individual ones of a first set of antennas to individual channels of the set of RF radios to communicate content data with client consumption devices and selectively couples individual ones of a second set of antennas to other individual channels of the set of RF radios to communicate content data with other mesh network devices in a WMN.
