Examples are disclosed that relate to sealing a heat pipe. One example provides a heat pipe including a heat pipe body having a sealed end at which opposing interior surfaces of the heat pipe body are joined, a sealant located in a least a portion of the sealed end of the heat pipe body between the opposing interior surface, the sealant having a higher oxygen transport rate than the heat pipe body, and a permanent seal forming an outer surface of the sealed end.

A vapor-chamber that includes a porous microstructure sheet with varying surface energy across different regions to optimize utilization of a working fluid. Modulating the surface energy of the porous microstructure sheet can minimize the amount of the working fluid that becomes trapped in the condenser region(s) and maximize an aggregate thin-film evaporation area of the working fluid in the evaporator region(s). The condenser region of the vapor-chamber is treated so that the internal surfaces have low surface energy. For example, the treatment may cause the condenser region to become hydrophobic to minimize the amount of fluid that becomes trapped in the condenser. The evaporator region is treated so that the internal surfaces have high surface energy. For example, the treatment may cause the evaporator region to become hydrophilic to induce the formation of large numbers of robust (e.g., dry-out resistant) thin-film evaporation sites.

A vapor chamber includes an electromagnetic (EM) shielding layer. The vapor chamber is constructed from a structural base material that provides for a suitable size, strength, and/or weight for a specific application. The vapor chamber is treated at the region(s) to provide suitable EM shielding characteristics for the specific application. For example, an oxidation layer is removed from the region(s) to expose the structural base material while the vapor chamber is in an inert environment that prevents further oxidation. Then, while the vapor chamber remains within the same inert environment, a material having suitable electrical conductive properties is deposited onto the exposed structural base material to form an EM shielding layer at the region(s). When the vapor chamber is installed into an electronic device, the EM shielding layer may be electrically grounded so as to isolate one or more components within the electronic device from EM signal interference.

Disclosed is a fit system for improving users' comfort with wearable articles, such as head-worn articles. The fit system includes a lattice of collapsible beams that can be constructed of elastomer foam located at the interface between the wearable article and a part of the user's body. The collapsible beam construction provides a non-linear relationship between the amount of force or pressure applied on the body part and the amount of compression of the foam.

A pad shape for a support assembly is optimized to provide universal fitting characteristics to Head-Mounted Display (HMD) devices. The pad shape enables a display of a single HMD device to be reliably aligned within multiple users' fields-of-view notwithstanding significant variations of shape and size between these users' heads. Optimal positioning of the display within the multiple users' fields-of-view may be achieved by positionally constraining the HMD device against a portion of the head that varies relatively slightly as compared to other portions of the head. The contact pad includes a curved region having a shape defined by a high order polynomial that corresponds to an empirically determined best fit surface. Empirically determining one or both of the best fit surface or the high order polynomial may include aligning a plurality of 'forehead' point clouds that map the geometries of a sample set of users' foreheads.

A two-phase thermodynamic system includes a porous microstructure sheet to increase an aggregate thin-film evaporation area of a working fluid. The porous microstructure sheet may be disposed at a liquid-vapor boundary of the working fluid. The porous microstructure sheet has 'micro' pores through which the working fluid flows from a liquid flow path on one side of the porous microstructure sheet to a vapor flow path on the other side of the porous microstructure sheet. Individual pores induce the working fluid to form thin-film evaporation regions. The porous microstructure sheet may have a pore density so as to increase an aggregate thin-film evaporation area of the working fluid. In this way, the overall thermal resistance across all liquid-vapor interfaces (menisci) of the working fluid is substantially decreased over conventional vapor chamber.

A system for increasing the temperature of a display element includes a heat source configured to perform a user experience function independent of generating heat. The system also includes a thermally conductive element that is coupled to the heat source and is positioned proximate to the display element, forming a thermally conductive path between the heat source and the display element. A method for increasing the temperature of a display element includes generating heat by operating a heat source to perform a user experience function independent of generating heat, and dispersing the heat from the heat source to the display element via a thermally conductive path formed by a thermally conductive element coupled to the heat source and positioned proximate to the display element.

Techniques disclosed herein relate to using thermally conductive textiles for heat dissipation from wearable electronic devices. An exemplary thermally conductive textile may be constructed from an elasticated band for encircling a body part of a user (e.g., a user's head) and one or more thermally conductive wires that are affixed to the elasticated band in a wave pattern. The thermally conductive wires being arranged in the wave pattern allows for the thermally conductive wires to freely stretch and contract as forces are exerted on the elasticated band. Thus, the thermally conductive textile described herein exhibit elastic properties that are predominantly governed by the elasticated band while also exhibiting thermal properties that are predominantly governed by the thermally conductive wires. The thermally conductive textiles may also include locking fibers to restrict deformation of the wave pattern of the thermally conductive wires.

Examples are disclosed herein that relate to curved batteries. One example provides a battery comprising an anode arranged on an anode substrate, a cathode arranged on a cathode substrate, the anode substrate being curved at a first curvature and the cathode substrate being curved at a second curvature, and a separator between the anode and the cathode. A thickness of the anode substrate and a thickness of the cathode substrate are determined based on the curvature of the respective substrate, such that the one of the anode substrate and the cathode substrate with a larger curvature has a larger thickness.

Devices having multiple layers of paint for enhanced thermal performance. Individual paint-layers have specific properties within specific wavelength-ranges. An exemplary device includes an emissive outer layer that has a high emissivity in a first wavelength-range to increase thermal radiation and a high transmittance in a second wavelength-range to reduce solar gain. Underneath the emissive outer layer is a color matching layer that has a high transmittance in the second wavelength-range and absorbs at least some visible light. Underneath the color matching layer is a reflective sublayer that has a high reflectivity in the second wavelength-range. EM radiation within the second wavelength-range passes through the emissive outer layer and color matching layer before being reflected by the reflective sublayer back into the atmosphere. Thus, solar gain is reduced due to the solar energy within the second wavelength range being reflected off of the device&#x2014;rather than absorbed as thermal energy.

A perspiration dissipating support assembly for head-mounted-display (HMD) devices. Variations of the perspiration dissipating support assembly disclosed herein enable supporting forces for an HMD device to be spread over a large portion of a user's head while facilitating dissipation of both liquid perspiration and vapor perspiration via respective dedicated dissipation mechanisms. In some embodiments, the perspiration dissipating support assembly includes a vapor-permeable contact layer that contacts the user's head and a vapor-permeable spacer that provides a Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate on the order of several times greater than that of the vapor-permeable contact layer. The vapor-permeable contact layer may have wicking properties that tend to draw perspiration (e.g., via capillary action resulting from a particular technical-weave pattern) away from the user's head and into the vapor-permeable spacer through which the perspiration evaporates into the ambient environment. The vapor-permeable spacer may be a three-dimensional fabric and/or an open-cell foam.

A rolled-electrode battery cell includes multiple, stacked electrode rolls that are stacked along a stacking axis. Each of the electrode rolls has its electrode tabs bonded to an end of the electrodes, so that the electrode tabs extend from the ends of the electrodes along the winding direction of the electrodes. The stacked electrode rolls are bent around respective bending axes that are parallel to their winding axes, and perpendicular to the stacking axis and the winding direction of the electrodes.

Disclosed are a stacked-electrode battery cell that has offset electrode-to-terminal bonds, and a method for manufacturing such a cell. The stacked-electrode battery cell can comprise an external connection terminal that includes a flat tab, and a plurality of flat electrodes stacked along a first coordinate axis and collectively forming at least a portion of an anode or a cathode of the battery cell. A first electrode of the plurality of flat electrodes is bonded to a first bond region of the tab and a second electrode of the plurality of flat electrodes is bonded to a second bond region of the tab, where the first bond region and the second bond region are non-overlapping along at least one coordinate axis perpendicular to the first coordinate axis.
