In part, the disclosure relates to a reflective loopback structure comprising a reflector, a first waveguide defining an optical input, a second waveguide defining an optical output; and a merged waveguide structure defining a front surface and a back surface and a first axis. In some embodiments, the reflector disposed at a back surface, the first axis normal to the front surface and the back surface, and the first waveguide and the second waveguide angled relative to each other by an angle θ defined therebetween. In many embodiments, the waveguides extend from the front surface in different directions and each angled relative to the first axis by an angle φ, wherein φ is about θ/2, the optical input in optical communication with the optical output, the reflector in optical communication with the first optical input and the first optical output.

Structure for reflective loopback of low-confinement waveguides

In part, the disclosure relates to a photonic device that includes a curved waveguide. The curved waveguide includes a curved elongate structure that includes a ridge. A first cross-section of the ridge has a first shape that substantially extends along the first elongate section of the curved elongate structure. The curved elongate structure defines a first elongate section, a second elongate section, and a third elongate section. At least one of the elongate sections has a non-linear curvature. The curved waveguide includes a plurality of layers. The photonic device also includes a trench defined by one or more of the plurality of layers.

Sharp adiabatic bends in low-confinement structures

In part, the disclosure relates to an optical coupler. The optical coupler may include two ridge waveguides that include a first waveguide and a second waveguide. One or more segments of the two waveguides extend over a coupling length or other distance. One or more sections of each ridge waveguide is at least partially defined by a set of cross-sectional profiles, a plurality of sections of each ridge waveguide have a width that tapers along a length of the two ridge waveguides. Within the coupling length, a subset of the set of cross-sectional profiles may define a first pair of transition regions and a second pair of transition regions. The coupler may include a coupling region between the two ridge waveguides and spanning at least a section of the coupling length.

The 3 dB coupler is optically coupled between the signal coupling facet and the reflector.
