A charge controller that responds to extreme transients in current, voltage, and temperature. The charge controller monitors the drift of the battery charging rate versus its request and compensates for wind up that may lead to uncontrolled current into a high-voltage battery. This bi-directional anti-wind up charge controller allows the battery management system to independently adjust the current request to the charger, which is primarily useful during vehicle component failure; charger side faults, over-commend, or uncontrolled current; and allows for safe and continuous charging during unexpected charger events. A dynamic saturation bound allows the charge controller to adjust its requested current and compensate for auxiliary current draws when the charger is capable of providing more current. The charge controller switches between voltage and current control based on the voltage of the battery, adjusting for variability in state-of-health, and temperature of the battery pack.

Charge controller

Various disclosed embodiments include illustrative non-transitory computer-readable media for controllers for vehicle-to-load (V2X) charging devices, controllers for V2X charging devices, and V2X charging devices. In an illustrative embodiment, non-transitory computer-readable media store therein computer-executable instructions that, when executed on a processor, are configured to cause the processor to: establish that a protocol to be followed in a charging session is a V2X charging session from a donor vehicle; initialize the V2X charging session from the donor vehicle; perform an isolation check of a V2X charging device from the donor vehicle; and pre-charge the V2X charging device.

Systems and methods for vehicle-to-load charging session initializing, communicating, and charging

Technical solutions provide a model-based cooling control of an EV battery during a direct current fast charging (DCFC) event. The technical solutions can include a processor coupled with memory to identify a state of charge (SOC), a temperature threshold and a gradient threshold for a difference in temperature between at least two cells of an EV battery. The processor can determine an amount of cooling to apply during a charge of the battery based at least on the SOC, the temperature of the battery and the difference in temperature input into a model for cooling the battery to maintain the temperature below the temperature threshold and the difference in temperature below the gradient threshold. The processor can provide to the battery the amount of cooling determined by the model to maintain the temperature below the temperature threshold and the difference in temperature below the gradient threshold during the charge.

Direct current fast charging cooling control

Disclosed embodiments include systems, vehicles, and methods to switchably provide electric power to a battery system and an external system, such as another battery system, from a single charging system or other source of electric power. In an illustrative embodiment, a charging input coupling couplable to an electric power source; a charging output coupling; a battery system coupling couplable to a rechargeable battery system; and an electric switching device electrically couplable to the charging input coupling, the charging output coupling, and the battery system coupling, and configured to selectively operate in an operating mode including at least one of a first mode and a second mode, wherein: in the first mode, the electric switching device directs the electric power to a the battery system coupling, and in the second mode, the electric switching device directs the electric power to the charging output coupling.

Vehicle pass-through charging

The present solution preserves an amount of charge sufficient to reach a nearest or most convenient charger in a battery of a vehicle during a prolonged vehicle disuse. The solution can include a data processing system that can identify an inactive state of a battery and determine that the vehicle should enter an energy reservation mode. The data processing system can identify a vehicle charger and determine, based on a location of the vehicle and the charger, an amount of energy needed for the vehicle to reach the charging unit. The data processing system can determine a power reservation threshold for the first battery and modify, based on the power reservation threshold, a level of energy provided by the first battery to the second battery to maintain at least the first amount of amount of energy in the first battery.

Preserving battery energy during a prolonged period of vehicle inactivity

Systems and methods are provided for estimating charge time for an electric vehicle. A current vehicle range of the electric vehicle may be determined, and a range selection of the electric vehicle may be determined. Based on the current vehicle range and a charging range associated with the range selection, an intermediate charging range between the current vehicle range and the charging range associated with the range selection is determined. An estimated charge time to charge the electric vehicle to the intermediate charging range may be determined, and an indication of the intermediate charging range and the estimated charge time to reach the intermediate charging range may be generated for presentation.

Charge time estimation

The present solution can execute a handshake process to establish a bidirectional session utilizing communications that can be implemented on EVs and chargers from various manufacturers. The present solution relates to a charger that can execute a handshake process communication between the charger and an electric vehicle to establish a session for bidirectional power delivery between the charger and the electric vehicle via a power cable. The charger can transmit, in the handshake process to the electric vehicle, a data structure comprising a field for a minimum current with a value for the field that is less than zero. The charger can configure, subsequent to transmission of the data structure comprising the value for the minimum current, the session for bidirectional power delivery between the charger and the electric vehicle via the power cable.
