A patient-specific acetabular guide can be used for preparing an acetabulum of a patient to receive an acetabular implant. The acetabular guide includes a patient-specific engagement surface designed to be complementary and mateable with a corresponding surface of the patient's pelvic anatomy. The acetabular guide is designed during a pre-operative plan for the patient by a three-dimensional reconstruction of the anatomy of the patient using two-dimensional medical images. The patient-specific engagement surface has a first portion mateable with a portion of the acetabulum of the patient. The acetabular guide includes a guiding element that extends from the acetabular guide opposite to the first portion of engagement surface. The guiding element defines a bore designed to be oriented along an alignment axis for an acetabular implant when the acetabular guide is engaged to the acetabulum.

Patient-specific acetabular guides and associated instruments

An implant for a hip can include a lateral augment adapted to be coupled to a lateral side of a femoral body implant. The lateral augment can include a body portion having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a protrusion extending from the second surface. The protrusion can have a shape adapted to mate with a complementary shaped recess formed in the lateral side of the femoral body implant. An aperture can be positioned in the body portion and extend through the protrusion. A fastener can be received through the aperture and adapted to be threadably secured to the lateral bore. The fastener can be configured to have a length sufficient to pass through a portion of a greater trochanter for securing the portion of the greater trochanter and the lateral augment to the femoral body implant.

A bone preparation system, such as a broach, includes at least a first member and a second member. The first member and the second member may be connected. Both the first member and the second member, when attached to the first member, are configured to directly contact and broach an anatomy.

Method and apparatus for preparing an implantation site

An acetabular device includes a patient-specific acetabular alignment guide including a bone engagement surface. The bone engagement surface has a first portion configured and shaped to be conforming and complementary to an acetabular rim surface and a second portion configured and shaped to be conforming and complementary to a periacetabular area of an acetabulum of a patient. The acetabular alignment guide includes a plurality of guiding formations extending through the second portion for guiding a plurality of alignment pins therethrough. The bone engagement surface and the plurality of guiding formations are prepared from a three-dimensional model of the acetabulum of the specific patient reconstructed pre-operatively from a scan of the patient.

An acetabular guide system for placing a guide pin near an acetabulum, includes a patient specific acetabular guide including an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface being configured to have a geometry to register within the acetabulum of a specific patient, a first drill insert configured to be received by the guide at a first location, the first drill insert having a first longitudinal bore configured to be received concentrically in a guide bore of the guide, the guide bore extending exterior to the interior surface, a second drill insert configured to be fixed to a boney portion exterior to the acetabulum at a second location a predetermined distance from the first location, the second drill insert forming a second longitudinal bore, and a selectively removable alignment pin configured to be received by at least one of the first longitudinal bore and the second longitudinal bore.

Method and apparatus for a pin apparatus

Disclosed is a system for engaging and holding a prosthesis both axially and rotationally relative to an inserter assembly. The inserter assembly can engage an acetabular prosthesis in a selected position, such as axially, with a first portion and then or subsequently engage the acetabular prosthesis with a second portion in a rotationally fixed manner. The acetabular prosthesis can then be inserted into a prepared acetabulum according to a disclosed method with the inserter assembly. The inserter assembly can then be removed from the acetabular prosthesis to allow for reduction of a femur.

Method and apparatus for implanting a prosthesis

A surgical kit for preparing a joint surface to receive an implant includes a patient-specific guide for a joint surface. The patient-specific guide has a patient-specific surface complementary to a surface of the joint for nesting engagement, and a guiding element oriented along a patient-specific alignment axis. The alignment axis is determined during a preoperative plan of the specific patient for implant alignment. The kit includes a guiding tool couplable to the guiding element of the patient-specific guide and a three-dimensional orientation device removably couplable the guiding tool for intra-operative calibration, such that, after calibration, the orientation device can be removably coupled to a shaft of a surgical instrument to align the shaft along the alignment axis.

An implant for a femoral head of a patient. The implant includes a shell implantable on the femoral head of the patient and correcting a defect of the femoral head. The shell is designed preoperatively to have a patient-specific first surface for articulation with the patient's acetabulum and a patient-specific periphery mateable with a periphery of the defect. The shell caps the defect and the first surface of the shell is continuous to a remaining healthy surface of the femoral head. The defect can be a bone defect, a cartilage defect or a combination thereof.

Patient-specific hip joint devices

A modular femoral hip implant trialing system. The system generally includes a proximal body, a fastener, and a fastener retention member. The proximal body includes a proximal bore, a tapered distal bore, and a passageway connecting the proximal bore to the distal bore. The proximal bore, the distal bore, and the passageway are aligned along a first axis. The fastener includes a head in the proximal bore and a stem in the distal bore, the fastener is aligned along the first axis. The fastener retention member is positioned in the proximal bore and is operable to retain at least a portion of the fastener within the proximal bore.

Method and apparatus for trialing and implanting a modular femoral hip

An orthopedic device includes a patient-specific acetabular guide that can be used for preparing an acetabulum of a patient to receive an acetabular implant and/or placement of an acetabular prosthesis. The acetabular guide has a body with an outer three-dimensional surface configured to match an acetabulum of a specific patient's hip joint designed from data of the patient's hip joint. The acetabular guide can further include a peripheral annular rim.

Modular lateral hip auguments

A method for inserting an acetabular implant into the acetabulum of a patient. The method includes engaging a patient-specific surface of acetabular alignment guide to a complementary rim surface and periacetabular area of a patient. A plurality of alignment pins are inserted through corresponding alignment apertures of the acetabular alignment guide and into the periacetabular area of the patient. The acetabular alignment guide is removed without removing the alignment pins from the patient. An alignment adapter is coupled to an acetabular inserter over the alignment pins and an acetabular implant is implanted using the acetabular inserter.

Disclosed is an acetabular positioning and insertion instrument. Additionally, a method of positioning an acetabular prosthesis with an insertion instrument is disclosed. The positioning instrument can include engaging members to contact an acetabular prosthesis and holding it relative to a portion of the instrument for both rotational and positioning of the prosthesis.

A prosthetic system is disclosed that can have a feature for identifying an aspect of the prosthetic member and related instruments. The identification feature can identify cooperating components of the prosthetic system, such as an implant and instruments for use with the implant.

A system for preparing a proximal femur can include a broach that includes a broach body having an anterior side, a posterior side, a lateral side and a medial side. The medial side can have a roughened cutting surface. The lateral side can have a smooth, non-cutting surface. The system can further comprise a cutting scribe assembly and a cutting guide assembly.
