An integrated circuit may detect a pin voltage at a selector pin. The integrated circuit may compare the pin voltage to a threshold voltage. The integrated circuit may selectively perform primary side voltage regulation or secondary side voltage regulation, to regulate a voltage supplied to an electrical load coupled to the integrated circuit, based on comparing the pin voltage and the threshold voltage.

An embodiment of the invention relates to an LLC power converter including a controller configured to regulate an output characteristic of the power converter by controlling a power converter switching frequency. In a first mode of operation, the controller turns off a secondary-side power switch earlier than a turn-off time of a primary-side power switch by a time difference that is controlled by a resistor coupled to an external circuit node. In a second mode of operation, the controller turns on a secondary-side power switch at substantially the same time as the primary-side power switch, and turns off the secondary-side power switch after a maximum on time that is a nonlinear function of a load current of the power converter. The nonlinear function is a substantially constant function of the load current for a value of the load current higher than a threshold value.

Controller for a resonant switched-mode power converter

An embodiment of the invention relates to a power converter including a resistor divider with an internal node to sense an input line voltage. The internal node is operable as a multifunctional pin. A controller compares a feedback voltage dependent on a power converter output characteristic to a current-sense signal including an offset dependent on a voltage of the internal node to control entry and exit of the power converter from burst mode operation. The node may be employed to manage power converter operation by sensing or controlling its voltage to signal operation in a standby or burst mode, to sense the input line voltage, to enable an external system to signal shutdown to the power converter, and to enable the power converter to signal a delayed restart condition to the external system.

Utilization of a multifunctional pin to control a switched-mode power converter

Some embodiments of the invention include an integrated circuit having a node or pin to detect a first information during a first a detection period and to detect a second information during a second detection period. In some embodiments, the information at the pin may allow the integrated circuit to operate in a quasi-resonant operation. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Apparatus, system, and method for multifunctional pin in an integrated circuit

Circuit and method for providing over-current and overloading protection with a single additional pin. A converter controller circuit is provided that includes a voltage controlled oscillator and outputs upper and lower gating signals for driving the upper and lower driving transistors in a voltage converter, for example, in an inductor-inductor capacitor half-bridge circuit topology. A current sense input pin of the circuit receives a voltage corresponding to the current flowing in the half-bridge circuit. A feedback input pin has an external capacitor coupled to it and receives a voltage from an output voltage sensor at the output terminals. Over-current protection is provided by sensing the voltage at the current sense input pin with no external components needed. Overload protection is provided by utilizing the external feedback capacitor and the feedback input pin during overload conditions. Methods for providing over-current and overload protection are disclosed.

Over current protection circuit and method

In a preferred embodiment, there is provided a switched mode power supply operable in start-up mode, normal mode and standby mode. The power supply may comprise a transformer having a primary winding on a primary side and a secondary winding on a secondary side, the primary winding being coupleable to a DC input voltage, and circuitry on the secondary side being arranged to provide a DC output voltage; and a power controller. The power controller may comprise a regulation controller for regulating a DC supply voltage on a supply line during standby mode, and a high voltage device coupled to the DC input voltage and the supply line. The current through the high voltage device to the supply line, during standby mode, may be controlled by the regulation controller. During standby mode, when the supply voltage is greater than or equal to a reference voltage, the current through the high voltage device to the supply line is substantially zero. When the supply voltage is less than the reference voltage, the greater the difference between the supply voltage and the reference voltage, the greater the current through the high voltage device to the supply line. In other preferred embodiments, there is also provided the power controller itself and a method for regulating a supply voltage during standby mode.
