A method and apparatus for providing a point-to-point connection are disclosed. The method queries for a next available label for a first provider edge router and a next available label for a second provider edge router, performs a first configuration at the first provider edge router and a second configuration at the second provider edge router, wherein the performing the first configuration comprises configuring a first interface and configuring a label for using at least one tunnel by a second interface, wherein the performing the second configuration comprises configuring a third interface and configuring a label for using the at least one tunnel by a fourth interface, and performs a first mapping for the first provider edge router from the first interface to the second interface, and a second mapping for the second provider edge router from the third interface to the fourth interface.

Method and apparatus for providing a point-to-point connection over a network

Managing prefix lists at edge devices can include detecting, at an edge device, a traffic flow that can include a packet that specifies a destination address. The edge device can measure a bandwidth associated with the traffic flow, identify a flow bandwidth threshold defined for the edge device, and determine if the bandwidth associated with the traffic flow satisfies the flow bandwidth threshold. If a determination is made that the bandwidth associated with the traffic flow satisfies the flow bandwidth threshold, the edge device can include the destination address in a prefix list stored at the edge device. If a determination is made that the bandwidth associated with the traffic flow does not satisfy the flow bandwidth threshold, the edge device can omit the destination address from the prefix list stored at the edge device.

A processing system may obtain a first sampled flow record for a first flow in a network, comprising information regarding selected packets of the first flow, derive, from the first sampled flow record, a data volume and a duration of the first flow, and determine a first flow metric for the first flow that is calculated from the data volume and the duration, where the first flow metric is one of a plurality of flow metrics for a plurality of flows, and where the plurality of flow metrics is determined from the plurality of sampled flow records associated with the plurality of flows. The processing system may then classify the first flow into one of at least two classes, based upon the first flow metric and at least a first flow metric threshold.

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for measuring packet delays are provided. An input port of a network device is tapped to duplicate an input packet stream having a first packet. An output port of the network device is tapped to duplicate an output packet stream including the first packet. The duplicated input packet stream and the duplicated output packet stream is transmitted to a programmable device. The first packet in the first input packet stream is matched to the first packet in the first output packet stream. An arrival time and a departure time for the first packet is measured. The difference between the departure time of the first packet and the arrival time of the first packet is determined and the value is reported to an external collector.

A router may include a central processing unit-based line card storing a forwarding table that includes a first set of entries, a network processing unit-based line card storing a partial forwarding table that includes a second set of entries comprising a subset of the first set of entries, where the second set of entries comprises entries that are most utilized by a plurality of line cards of the router, and a route controller for updating the second set of entries to comprise the entries that are the most utilized. The network processing unit-based line card may forward a packet when an entry in the partial forwarding table matches the packet and may forward the packet to the central processing unit-based line card to forward the packet when there is no entry in the partial forwarding table of the network processing-unit based line card that matches the packet.
