The present invention provides non-magnetic stainless steel which is used as materials for small parts in precision machines and electronic equipment. The non-magnetic stainless steel consists of an iron-based alloy containing 9 to 22% by weight of nickel, 12 to 26% by weight of chromiun, the balance of iron and inevitable impurities. The martensitic area ratio of the iron-based alloy structure is not more than 20%. The stainless steel exhibits excellent workability and is suitable as a raw material for TV electron gun parts and small gears which are formed by strong working such as blanking or the like.

There is disclosed a method for forming a decorative metallic nitride coating on the surface of a substrate comprising the steps of disposing said substrate to be coated as a cathode in a material gas atmosphere at a pressure of 0.1 to 10 Torr, with said substrate maintained at a temperature of 200.degree. to 1000.degree. C., and applying a voltage of 200 to 8000 V to said substrate to prepare a direct current glow discharge space in the vicinity of said substrate, the improvement which comprises using as said material gas a mixed gas of a halide of titanium, zirconium or hafnium; hydrogen; and nitrogen, and controlling the current density of the electric current flowing through said substrate to be within the range of 0.01 to 1 mA/cm.sup.2. The method according to the present invention provides a uniform and beautiful metallic nitride coating which has a metallic luster stable with time, is excellent in mar resistance, and is suitable for decoration. Further, according to the method of this invention, a decorative metallic nitride coating capable of varying a tone on a metallic luster surface over a wide range can be formed.

There is provided an apparatus for processing a surface of an object to be processed by utilizing microwave plasma within a plasma-producing chamber, which comprises a microwave power-generating means; a wave guide for transmitting microwaves generated from said microwave power-generating means; a closed vessel constituting the plasma-producing chamber separated from said wave guide by a separating means; an antenna for transmitting microwaves, one end thereof protruding into the wave guide and another end thereof protruding into the closed vessel and a supporting means, for holding or supporting the electroconductive object to be processed, provided within the closed vessel and so attached to the antenna that the antenna and the electroconductive object may be electrically connected to each other.
