Provided is a polymer material having superior water wettability and lubricity, and enabling persistence of the same by allowing the surfactant to be retained by the polymer material so as not to be gradually released. The present invention is directed to a polymer material including: [I] a polymer having a constitutional unit derived from (A) a polymerizable compound having an acryloyloxy group and not having a silicon atom; and [II] a surfactant. The content of the surfactant [II] is preferably 0.05% by mass or greater and 1% by mass or less. The surfactant [II] is preferably a nonionic surfactant having a polyoxyethylene group.

A silicon carbide ceramic is provided which has a small amount of resistivity change due to changes in temperature and which is capable of generating heat by current application. The silicon carbide ceramic contains silicon carbide crystals having 0.1 to 25 mass % of 4H&#x2014;SiC silicon carbide crystals and 50 to 99.9 mass % of 6H&#x2014;SiC silicon carbide crystals, preferably having a nitrogen content of 0.01 mass % or less, more preferably containing two or more kinds of silicon carbide particles containing silicon carbide crystals and silicon for binding the silicon carbide particles to each other and having a silicon content of from 10 to 40 mass %.

An ocular lens material comprising a copolymer prepared by polymerization with heating of a monomer mixture and/or with irradiating a monomer mixture with ultraviolet ray by means of a molding method, the monomer mixture containing a polysiloxane macromonomer A, a Si-containing alkyl methacrylate B, a hydrophilic monomer C comprising NVP as C-1 and another hydrophilic monomer C-2, another monomer D and a crosslinkable monomer E comprising a crosslinkable monomer E-1 containing at least one group selected from acryloyl group, vinyl group and allyl group, and methacryloyl group, and a crosslinkable monomer E-2 containing at least two methacryloyl groups as main components, wherein (A+B)/C (weight ratio) is 30/70 to 70/30, A/B is 25/75 to 75/25, C-1/C-2 is 50/50 to 100/0, the amount of D is 0 to 20% by weight in the monomer mixture, which has high oxygen permeability, high mechanical strength, excellent surface wettability and low surface frictional property.

A process for preparing an urethane compound for medical instruments, characterized by reacting a hydroxyl compound (A) with an isocyanate compound (B) in the absence of a catalyst or in the presence of a reaction catalyst other than an organic tin compound to give an urethane compound (I). A process for preparing an ocular lens material having hydrophilic surface, characterized by comprising the steps of (1) irradiating the surface of an ocular lens material with high-frequency plasma or excimer ultarviolet-ray; (2) contacting the surface of the ocular lens material, which is treated in accordance with the step (1), with a hydrophilic monomer-mixture solution containing at least one zwitterionic group-containing compoud; and (3) irradiating the surface of the ocular lens material, which is in the state of contacting with the hydrophilic monomer-mixture solution in the step (2), with ultraviolet-ray having a wavelength of 250 to 500 nm and then, graft polymerizing the zwitterionic group-containing compound to the surface of the ocular lens material and then, forming a surface layer; and an ocular lens material having hydrophilic surface prepared by the process.
