An image display apparatus includes a rear plate including electron emitting devices each including a pair of electrodes and an electron emitting unit, first wirings each interconnecting electrodes in one of the pair of electrodes of the electron emitting devices arrayed at the same row, second wirings each interconnecting electrodes in another of the pair of electrodes of the electron emitting devices arrayed at the same column and higher in resistance than the first wirings, an insulating layer covering the second wirings, and resistive films connected to the first wirings and partially overlapping with the second wirings to cover the insulating layer, and having surface resistance set to 10&#x3a9;/&#x25a1; or more. The resistive films are connected to the first wirings at portions not overlapping with the second wirings, and a length L of the resistive film between a portion of the resistive film connected to the first wiring and a portion overlapping with the second wiring satisfies a relationship.

An electron-emitting device has an insulating layer having a side surface, a recess portion formed on the side surface of the insulating layer, a gate electrode which is arranged above the recess portion, and a wedge-shaped emitter which is arranged on an edge of a lower side of the recess portion and has a first slope on a side of the recess portion and a second slope on a side opposite to the recess portion. A lower end of the first slope of the emitter enters the recess portion, and both the first slope and the second slope of the emitter tilt to an outside of the recess portion.

Electron-emitting device and image display apparatus using the same

Provided is an electron-emitting device using a carbon fiber as an electronic member. A carbon fiber through which a cathode electrode and a control electrode are short-circuited is removed to obtain an electron-emitting device having a uniform electron emission characteristic. A first electrode including a plurality of fibers each containing carbon and a second electrode are prepared. Then, a voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode with a state where a potential of the first electrode becomes higher than a potential of the second electrode to remove a carbon fiber through which the first electrode and the second electrode are short-circuited.

The present invention provides a method of manufacturing an electron source which exhibits improved uniformity of electron emitting devices and electron emission properties, and a method of manufacturing an image forming apparatus which exhibits an excellent display quality for a long time. An electron source having a plurality of electron emitting devices is manufactured by disposing a plurality of units, each comprising a pair of electrodes and a polymer film for connecting the electrodes, on a substrate, disposing a plurality of wirings for connection to the pair of electrodes of the plurality of each unit, and decreasing the resistances of all polymer films respectively of the units. A next step includes applying a voltage to films formed by decreasing the resistances of the polymer films, through the wirings, to form a gap in each of the films formed by decreasing the resistance of the polymer films.
