The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that, with photo-alignment films, can maintain a favorable voltage holding ratio for a long period of time and prevent generation of image sticking and stains on the display screen. The liquid crystal display device includes: an active-matrix liquid crystal panel; and a backlight, the liquid crystal panel including a liquid crystal layer, paired substrates holding the liquid crystal layer in between, and alignment films disposed on the liquid crystal layer side surfaces of the respective substrates, the alignment films each being a photo-alignment film formed from a material exhibiting photo-alignment performance, the liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal material and a radical scavenger.

Liquid crystal display device

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device with a high degree of freedom in molecular structure design of an alignment film and with reduced image sticking. The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer held between the substrates; an alignment film disposed on a liquid crystal layer side surface of at least one of the substrates; and a polymer layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the alignment film, the alignment film containing a first polymer containing at least one structure represented by the following formula (1) in a side chain, wherein Rrepresents a C3-C6 branched or cyclic alkylene group, and a hydrogen atom at a para position to a carbonyl group in the phenyl group is optionally replaced.

A liquid crystal display device includes: a first polarizing plate; a first substrate; a first vertical alignment film; a liquid crystal layer; a second vertical alignment film; a second substrate; and a second polarizing plate, wherein a first retardation layer is disposed between the first polarizing plate and the liquid crystal layer and includes first and second areas having mutually different in-plane phase differences, a second retardation layer is disposed between the second polarizing plate and the liquid crystal layer and includes third and fourth areas having mutually different in-plane phase differences, the first and third areas overlap boundaries between at least four domains of liquid crystal molecules in a pixel region and have an in-plane phase difference in a predetermined range, and in-plane slow axes of the first and third areas and absorption axes of the first and second polarizing plates each have a predetermined azimuth.

A substrate provided with an alignment film includes: a substrate including an electrode on a surface thereof; and an alignment film in contact with the electrode. The alignment film contains a first polymer that contains a polysiloxane structure in a side chain and a second polymer that contains a photo-reactive group or a vertically aligning functional group. The alignment film includes a first surface that is placed on a side close to the electrode and contains the first polymer and a second surface that is placed on a side opposite to the first surface and contains the second polymer. The first polymer has a weight that is equal to or greater than a weight of the second polymer in the alignment film.

The present invention relates to an alignment film including: a polymer, wherein the polymer is a polysiloxane or a polyvinyl and contains a silsesquioxane group. The present invention also relates to a polymer for use in the alignment film, the polymer containing a silsesquioxane group. The present invention also relates to a liquid crystal display device including: the alignment film; a pair of substrates; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates, wherein the alignment film is disposed between at least one of the substrates and the liquid crystal layer.

Oriented film, polymer, and liquid crystal display device

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that maintains a sufficient voltage holding ratio over a long period of time even when a liquid crystal panel having a narrower frame is used and that undergoes no burn-in or no stains on a display screen. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes an active-matrix liquid crystal panel and a backlight, wherein the liquid crystal panel includes a liquid crystal layer, a pair of substrates between which the liquid crystal layer is sandwiched, alignment layers disposed on surfaces of the pair of substrates facing the liquid crystal layer, and a seal part that bonds the pair of substrates to each other and that is disposed around the liquid crystal layer, and the liquid crystal panel is formed by a liquid crystal one-drop fill process, wherein the liquid crystal layer includes a liquid crystal material and at least one of a radical scavenger and an antioxidant, and the seal part has a width of 0.6 mm or less at least in part.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that is capable of achieving good display characteristics even if the pixel size is reduced. Liquid crystal display panel and method for producing the same

A liquid crystal display device which can suppress generation of a locally luminous part where a dark line disappears. The display device includes: a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates, wherein one of the pair of substrates includes a pair of electrodes in pixel. At least one of the electrodes may include a comb-tooth portion. A first comb-tooth portion of one of the pair of electrodes and a second comb-tooth portion of the other one of the pair of electrodes may be disposed to face each other. The distance between the pair of electrodes in a transverse direction of the comb-tooth portions of the pair of electrodes is at most 10 &#x3bc;m in example embodiments, and a rotational viscosity of the p-type nematic liquid crystals may be at least 130 mPa&#xb7;s.
