[Problems] Disclosed is a surge absorber which can absorb a surge having a long wave tail, wherein a stable sparkover voltage is obtained without applying a discharging aid to electrodes. [Means for Solving the Problems] The surge absorber is comprised of a pair of terminal electrode members () which are opposed to each other; and the insulation tube () on which the pair of terminal electrode members () are disposed on opposite ends thereof and that has a discharge control gas sealed therein. Bulging electrode elements () having an expanded center portion () are formed on the inner surfaces of the terminal electrode members (). The bulging electrode elements () contain metal which can emit more electrons than the terminal electrode members ().

Surge absorber

A surge protector coated with an oxide layer having an excellent chemical stability at the high temperature range and excellent adherence with respect to main discharge electrodes. The surge protector includes a column-shaped ceramic member that has a conductive film divided by a discharge gap interposed therebetween; a pair of main discharge electrode members opposite to each other on both ends of the column-shaped ceramic member to come in contact with the conductive film; and a cylindrical ceramic tube which is fitted to the pair of main discharge electrode members opposite to each other to seal both the column-shaped ceramic member and sealing gas inside thereof. Oxide films are formed on main discharge surfaces of at least the protrusive supporting portions of the pair of main discharge electrode members opposite to each other, by performing an oxidation treatment, respectively.

Method of forming a surge protector

In a surge absorber, a pair of protrusion electrodes is fixed to a pair of terminal electrode members at positions shifted from the center of the terminal electrode members to be point-symmetrical with the center of a ceramic insulator tube and a distance between the protrusion electrodes is adjusted so as to obtain a desired discharge starting voltage. As a result, it is possible to easily change the distance between the discharge electrodes without changing the length of the discharge electrodes.
