A method for producing an aromatic polymer comprising polycondensing an aromatic compound of the following formula (I) in the presence of a palladium complex containing a phosphine compound of the following formula (II): (wherein, Ar represents an aromatic ring-containing bi-functional organic group. Method for producing aromatic polymer

Disclosed is a method for producing a block copolymer which comprises two or more blocks composed of aromatic units having different basic structures from each other and has a high molecular weight, a narrow chain length distribution and a narrow molecular weight distribution. Also disclosed is a block copolymer produced by the method. The method for producing a block copolymer comprises the step of sequentially reacting two or more aromatic compounds which are selected from aromatic compounds represented by a specific general formula and are different in the group Ar, in the presence of a nickel complex containing a phosphine compound represented by a specific general formula or a palladium complex containing a phosphine compound represented by a specific general formula to thereby form blocks comprising the aromatic compounds sequentially, wherein the two or more aromatic compounds are reacted in descending order of parameter of aromatic ring charge.

A method for producing an aromatic polymer includes polycondensing an aromatic compound represented by formula (I) in the presence of a nickel complex containing a phosphine compound represented by formula (II), wherein, Ar denotes an aromatic ring containing organic group, which aromatic ring may contain an oxygen atom and/or a nitrogen atom; R denotes a monovalent group containing a hydrocarbon group; k is an integer of 1 or more; X denotes an halogen atom, a nitro group or a group represented by &#x2014;SOQ, wherein Q denotes a monovalent hydrocarbon group; Y denotes O, S, an imino group, an ethenylene group, or an ethynylene group; n denotes 0 or 1; and M denotes H, &#x2014;B(OQ), &#x2014;Si(Q), &#x2014;Sn(Q)or &#x2014;Z(Z)m, wherein Qdenotes H or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; Qand Qdenote a monovalent hydrocarbon group; Zdenotes a metal atom or a metal ion; Zdenotes a counter ion; and m is an integer of 0 or higher; wherein, Rdenotes a monovalent hydrocarbon group, and Rdenotes a divalent hydrocarbon group.
