A method for driving a plasma display panel (PDP) that can increase dark contrast without causing erroneous discharges is provided. A unit display period is divided into a plurality of subfields. A reset process and a sustain process are performed in one of the subfields. In the reset process, a reset pulse is applied to row electrodes of the PDP to initialize each discharge cell to an emission mode (or non-emission mode). In the sustain process, a sustain discharge is repeatedly generated a number of times, corresponding to the number of times a sustain pulse is to be applied, in those discharge cells that are in the emission mode. In this case, a peak potential of the reset pulse is changed based on the number of those discharge cells that are maintained in the non-emission mode during the unit display period and the number of times the sustain pulse is to be applied in the sustain process in this subfield.

Method for driving plasma display panel

A plasma display panel and a drive method therefor, which can enhance a representation capability when displaying a dark image. The plasma display panel includes fluorophor layers containing magnesium oxide. The drive method includes a reset step to initialize all the pixel cells into states of one of a light-up mode and a light-off mode, and an address step in which the pixel cells are caused to perform address discharges selectively in accordance with pixel data, which are successively executed in each of a head subfield and a second subfield within a one-field display period. In reset step, a voltage that sets row electrodes on one side, in the row electrode pairs as an anode and sets the column electrodes set as a cathode is applied between the row electrodes on the one side and the column electrodes.

Plasma display panel and drive method therefor

A plasma display device in which a sustain pulse having a leading period is applied between row electrodes forming each row electrode pair by a number of times previously determined for each subfield, in a sustain period, and a length of the leading period of the sustain pulse is set in accordance with an accumulated light emission time or an accumulated use time of the plasma display panel.

A plasma display panel driving method in which a reset step and an address step are sequentially executed in the first subfield and second subfield of each field. A microemission step is executed in the first subfield for generating a microemission discharge between ones of the row electrodes and the column electrodes in display cells in the ON mode by applying a voltage for using the ones of the row electrodes as the anode and the column electrodes as the cathode, between the electrodes immediately after the address step. Moreover, in the microemission step, a potential lower than the voltage generated when applying a sustain pulse is respectively applied to the ones and the others of the row electrodes while applying a voltage as described above between the ones of the row electrodes and the column electrodes.

There are provided a plasma display device in which dark contrast can be enhanced without deteriorating an image quality and a method of driving a plasma display panel. In a case of driving a plasma display device in which a magnesium oxide layer containing a magnesium oxide crystal to be excited by the irradiation of an electron beam and performing a cathode luminescence having a peak in a wavelength range of 200 to 300 nm by a sub-field method, in order to initialize all display cells, reset discharge is caused in each of the display cells in M sub-fields of N consecutive sub-fields (0&#x3c;M&#x3c;N).

To allow discharge cells operating as pixels of the display panel to repeatedly perform sustain discharge, a fall period of a last sustain pulse of sustain pulses repeatedly applied to row electrodes includes a first voltage drop period in which a voltage value gently drops, a voltage constant period which follows the first voltage drop period and in which the voltage value remains constant for a predetermined period, and a second voltage drop period which follows the voltage constant period and in which the voltage value drops more gently than in the first voltage drop period.

Each of at least two successive sub-fields including a leading sub-field includes a selective write addressing step for setting the discharge cells to a lighted discharge cell mode by selectively causing a writing discharge in the discharge cells in accordance with the video signal. The sub-fields following at least two sub-fields include a selective erasure addressing step for setting the discharge cells to an unlighted discharge cell mode by selectively causing an erasing discharge in the discharge cells in accordance with the video signal and an emission sustain step for repeatedly causing a sustain discharge corresponding to a weighting of that sub-field only in the discharge cells that are in the lighted discharge cell mode. The last sub-field of each field includes a first erasing step for inducing a first erasing discharge between the column electrode and one of the row electrodes of the row electrode pair belonging to the discharge cells that have been set to the unlighted discharge cell mode in the selective erasure addressing step and a second erasing step for inducing a second erasing discharge between the row electrodes of the row electrode pair belonging to the discharge cells that have been set to the lighted discharge cell mode in the selective write addressing step, the first erasing step and the second erasing step being performed immediately after the emission sustain step.

In order to provide a method for driving a display panel capable of improving durability of a driving device for driving a display panel, when a scan pulse is applied in superposition with a base pulse to one of row electrodes of one row electrode pair among row electrode pairs while the base pulse is applied to one of the row electrodes of all the row electrode pairs in the display panel and a pixel data pulse corresponding to an image signal is applied to the row electrode at the same timing as that of the scan pulse to set discharge cells to either one of a light-on mode and a light-off mode, a change ratio of a voltage value in a fall period in the base pulse is smaller than a change ratio of a voltage value in a fall period in the scan pulse.

Method for driving a display panel

The present invention is a display device and display panel drive method that allow a more rapid select operation to be stably implemented by increasing the discharge probability of selective discharge. The display device comprises an address part that sequentially applies a positive scan pulse to a first row electrode of each of the display panel row electrode pairs in the address cycle while sequentially applying a pixel data pulse corresponding to the pixel data at the same timing as the scan pulse to each of the display panel column electrodes one display line at a time so that the column electrode side constitutes a cathode, such that an address discharge is selectively produced in the second discharge cell; and a sustain part that applies a sustain pulse to each of the row electrodes constituting the row electrode pairs in the sustain cycle, and the sustain part applies the ultimate sustain pulse of the sustain pulses applied in the address cycle to the first row electrode with a negative polarity.

Display device and display panel drive method

A display panel includes a plurality of unit light emission areas (light emission elements) arranged in a matrix. Each unit light emission area is defined by a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell. The second discharge cell has a light-absorbing layer. When the display panel is driven to express an image having a plurality of gradation levels, address discharge is selectively caused in the second discharge cells in accordance with an input image signal. Light leaks to the first discharge cell from the second discharge cell upon the address discharge. This light is used to express the gradation of low luminance. Since luminance difference between gradation levels of a low luminance image is reduced, it is possible to display a high quality, low luminance image.
