A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, a liquid crystal layer, a pixel electrode, a counter electrode, a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the pixel electrode, and a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the counter electrode. The pixel electrode includes first micro-electrode patterns extending in a first direction, second micro-electrode patterns extending in a second direction, third micro-electrode patterns extending in a third direction and fourth micro-electrode patterns extending in a fourth direction, wherein the first, second, third and fourth directions are different from one another. When a driving voltage is applied between the pixel and counter electrodes, liquid crystal molecules that are located at the first, second, third and fourth micro-electrode patterns are tilted parallel to a corresponding one of the first, second, third and fourth directions, respectively, when viewed in a plan view.

Liquid crystal display device and method for fabricating the same

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, and a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween. The device also includes a first electrode formed on the first substrate and a second electrode formed on the second substrate; a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode; a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode; a plurality of micro structures associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes; and a plurality of rough structural patterns associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes. At least some of the micro structures extend generally parallel to each other, and the rough structural patterns extend in directions different from directions in which the micro structures extend.

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween. The device also includes a first electrode formed on the first substrate, a second electrode formed on the second substrate, a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode, a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode, and a plurality of micro structures associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes, wherein at least some of the micro structures extend generally parallel to each other. When a driving voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are oriented such that no dark line occurs in a vicinity of the plurality of micro structures and no dark line occurs between adjacent micro structures.

A liquid crystal display including a pair of substrates; a plurality of electrodes formed in a matrix on one of the pair of substrates, wherein each of the plurality of electrodes includes a plurality of stripe-like portions that define a plurality of spaces therebetween; polymer material and liquid crystal between the pair of substrates; and polymer alignment films which are formed on each of the substrates and are affected by light irradiation and cause alignment of the liquid crystal in predetermined directions. The plurality of stripe-like portions extend in at least two different directions which are not parallel to each other.

Liquid crystal display and method of manufacturing the same

A method for producing a liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates, a first electrode formed on one substrate, a second electrode formed on the other substrate, and liquid crystal molecules filled between the substrates. The method includes providing alignment layer material exhibiting a vertically orienting property for a selected one of the substrates, aligning a mask having permeable portions and impermeable portions over a selected substrate, irradiating the mask with ultraviolet rays in a first inclined azimuthal direction, and simultaneously irradiating the mask from a second inclined azimuthal direction which is substantially 180 degrees different from the first inclined azimuthal direction. Additionally, the azimuthal direction of the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in a first region of the substrate is substantially 180 degrees different from the azimuthal direction of the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in a second region of the substrate.

Method for producing liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display including two substrates arranged opposite to each other; a liquid crystal sealed between the substrates; and a polymer layer for regulating a pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules and/or tilt directions at a time of driving. One of the substrates has a color filter layer formed on a side of the one substrate, and a plurality of stripe-like electrode patterns are provided on the color filter layer. The patterns are periodically arranged so that when polymerizable components mixed in the liquid crystal layer are polymerized to form the polymer layer while a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer between the electrode patterns and a second electrode on the other substrate, liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer are aligned in the extending directions of stripe-like electrode patterns.

A substrate for a liquid crystal display device, including a pixel electrode formed on the substrate, wherein the pixel electrode includes a micro-cutout pattern defined by a plurality of micro-cutouts extending in four different directions with respect to an extension direction of a rough structural pattern. The substrate also includes a first electrode extending in a first direction, a second electrode extending in a second direction that is approximately perpendicular to the first direction, and a contact hole that electrically connects the pixel electrode and the first electrode. A portion of the rough structural pattern and/or a portion of the micro-cutout pattern overlap the first electrode. Also disclosed is a liquid crystal display device including such a substrate.

Liquid crystal display device and substrate for liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween; and first and second electrodes formed, respectively, on the first and second substrates. A first molecule orientation film is formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode and a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode. A polarizer with a light absorption axis P is provided outside of the first substrate, and an analyzer with a light absorption axis A is provided outside of the second substrate. The light absorption axis A crosses the light absorption axis P. A plurality of micro structures are associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes, wherein the micro structures are obliquely arranged with respect to the light absorption axis P and the light absorption axis A.

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of spaced and opposed substrates, an electrode and a first alignment layer formed on one substrate, an electrode and a second alignment layer formed on the other substrate, and liquid crystal filled between the pair of substrates. The first alignment layer defines two regions of different alignment directions, within one pixel, with the two regions of the first alignment layer being separated by a first boundary, where the two different alignment directions of the first alignment layer are generally parallel to the first boundary, but extend in opposite directions, and where each region of the first alignment layer is treated to realize an alignment with a pretilt angle by the irradiation of ultraviolet rays. The second alignment layer defines two regions of different alignment directions, within the one pixel, with the two regions of the second alignment layer being separated by a second boundary, where the two different alignment directions of the second alignment layer are generally parallel to the second boundary, but extend in opposite directions, and where each region of the second alignment layer is treated to realize an alignment with a pretilt angle by the irradiation of ultraviolet rays. The first boundary crosses said second boundary.

Alignment treatment of liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates, an electrode and an alignment layer formed on each of the substrates, and a liquid crystal filled between the pair of substrates. The alignment layer of one of the pair of substrates is treated so that the alignment layer is divided into a plurality of stripe regions including a first stripe region and a second stripe region adjacent to the first stripe region, the first and second stripe regions extending parallel to each other and forming a first boundary therebetween. A direction of alignment of liquid crystal molecules on the first stripe region is opposite to a direction of alignment of liquid crystal molecules on the second stripe region, and directions of alignment of liquid crystal molecules on the first and second stripe regions are parallel to the first boundary. A shading layer is provided to cover the first boundary.

An alignment-treating method including a first irradiation step of conducting an alignment-treating for realizing an alignment of liquid crystals in a predetermined azimuth direction on a alignment layer of a substrate by obliquely irradiating the substrate with ultraviolet rays, and a second irradiation step of conducting an alignment-treating for realizing an alignment of liquid crystals in an azimuth direction different from the predetermined azimuth direction by obliquely irradiating a region of the substrate where ultraviolet ray irradiation has not been conducted in the first irradiation step with ultraviolet rays in an azimuth direction 180&#xb0; different from an azimuth direction of ultraviolet ray irradiation in the first irradiation step. In the first and second irradiation steps, the substrate is obliquely irradiated with ultraviolet rays, through a mask having stripe-shaped light shielding area and stripe-shaped opening, in an azimuth direction parallel to a longer direction of the stripe-shaped opening.

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules between the first and second substrates. A first electrode formed on the first substrate and a second electrode formed on the second substrate. An alignment layer is formed on at least one of the substrates, and a polymer is formed on the alignment layer. The liquid crystal molecules are tilted when no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal molecules. The first electrode has a plurality of stripe-like electrode patterns, and the stripe-like electrode patterns have a width that is wider than a width of a space between adjacent strip-like electrode patterns.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including 1and 2substrates. A linearly extending scan electrode and a linearly extending signal electrode are formed on the 1substrate, wherein the scan electrode extends in a direction crossing an extension direction of the signal electrode. A liquid crystal layer is between the 1and 2substrates, and a pixel electrode is formed on the 1substrate. The pixel electrode is electrically connected to both the scan and signal electrodes. The pixel electrode is divided into at least two regions such that at least two domains of different liquid crystal orientation directions are defined within a single pixel. A 1and a 2of the at least two regions are not aligned in parallel with either the extension direction of the scan electrode or the extension direction of the signal electrode. The 1and 2regions each include a micro-cutout pattern.

A method for producing a liquid crystal display device including a first irradiation step for realizing alignment of liquid crystals in a first azimuth direction on a first alignment layer by obliquely irradiating the first substrate, a second irradiation step for realizing alignment of liquid crystals in a second azimuth direction by obliquely irradiating a region of the first substrate where irradiation has not been conducted in the first irradiation step with rays in an azimuth direction that is 180 degrees different from an azimuth direction of irradiation in the first irradiation step, a third irradiation step for realizing alignment of liquid crystals in a third azimuth direction on a second alignment layer by obliquely irradiating the second substrate, and a sticking step of sticking together the first and second substrates such that the first azimuth direction and the third azimuth direction are perpendicular to each other.

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates, a first alignment layer formed on one substrate and a second alignment layer formed on the other substrate, and a plurality of pixels, each having four different alignment regions. The first alignment layer is treated to define two different pretilt directions for the liquid crystal molecules within the four alignment regions, wherein the two different pretilt directions are opposite each other and both extend in a generally parallel direction to a first boundary defined between two regions in which the two different pretilt directions are defined, and said second alignment layer defines another two different pretilt directions within the four alignment regions, wherein the two different pretilt directions are opposite each other and both extend in a generally parallel direction to a second boundary defined between two regions in which the another two different pretilt directions are defined.
