An image forming apparatus includes: a first optical head group including first optical heads arranged in a sub-scanning direction; a second optical head group including second optical heads arranged in the sub-scanning direction and overlapping the first optical head group in a main scanning direction; a detector that detects displacement amounts between the first optical heads and the second optical heads; and a controller that performs registration based on the detection by the detector. The controller performs, with one of the first optical heads as a reference, registration on the other first optical heads, performs, with one of the second optical heads as a reference, registration on the other second optical heads, and performs registration between the first optical head group and the second optical head group based on a displacement amount between one of the first optical heads and one of the second optical heads.

An image formation method includes: a first image formation misregistration correction processing that causes each image formation unit to form a misregistration amount detection pattern, obtains an image formation misregistration amount by detecting the patterns, and corrects an image formation misregistration based on the obtained image formation misregistration amount; comparison processing that compares a previous image formation misregistration amount with a latest image formation misregistration amount; and a second image formation misregistration correction processing that causes each image formation unit to form new misregistration amount detection patterns, obtains a new image formation misregistration amount by detecting the new patterns and corrects the image formation misregistration based on the obtained new image formation misregistration amount when receiving a new print job and if a difference between the previous image formation misregistration amount and the latest image formation misregistration amount is larger than a predetermined value.

An image formation apparatus includes an image carrier, a charge device configured to charge the surface of the image carrier, a development device configured to pass a developer to an electrostatic latent image on the image carrier formed by exposure, a transfer device configured to transfer a developer image formed on the image carrier onto a medium, a remover device configured to remove the developer on the image carrier, and a controller configured to control a cleaning mode for removing extraneous matter adhered to the surface of the charge device at a time other than the time for the process of exposing the image carrier, and to change the execution frequency of the cleaning mode in accordance with an environmental condition.
