A fuel-cell cell according to the present disclosure includes an electrolyte membrane, a cathode catalyst layer laminated on a first main surface side of the electrolyte membrane, a cathode gas diffusion layer laminated on the cathode catalyst layer, an anode catalyst layer laminated on a second surface side of the electrolyte membrane, and an anode gas diffusion layer laminated on the anode catalyst layer. The cathode catalyst layer includes a cathode catalyst in which catalyst particles with a catalytic function are carried on a carrier, and the cathode catalyst includes a water-repellent polymer material in at least part of a surface thereof.

A fuel battery includes a membrane-electrode assembly including a first catalyst layer and a first gas diffusion layer stacked on a first surface of a polymer electrolyte membrane, and a second catalyst layer and a second gas diffusion layer stacked on a second surface of the polymer electrolyte membrane. The membrane-electrode assembly is interposed between a first separator and a second separator. The first separator includes a rib and a groove on a surface that is in contact with the first gas diffusion layer, the rib and the groove defining a gas flow path through which a reaction gas is to flow. A thickness of the first gas diffusion layer is defined as h, and a width of a portion of the rib that is in contact with the first gas diffusion layer is defined as Rw such that 0.29 Rw&#x2264;h&#x2264;0.55 Rw is satisfied.

A fuel battery cell includes: a first separator, a first gas diffusion layer, a first catalyst layer, a polymer electrolyte membrane, a second catalyst layer, a second gas diffusion layer, and a second separator that are sequentially laminated along a laminating direction; a first gas flow path part that is provided between the first separator and the first gas diffusion layer; and a second gas flow path part that is provided between the first separator and the first gas diffusion layer and adjacent to the first gas flow path part in a direction intersecting the laminating direction, and has a flow path area larger than that of the first gas flow path part in a plan view seen along the laminating direction. The first gas diffusion layer includes a first low-elasticity part facing the first gas flow path part, and a first high-elasticity part facing the second gas flow path part and having a higher compressive modulus of elasticity than that of the first low-elasticity part in the laminating direction.

A positive electrode for an air battery includes a current collector and a porous layer including an electroconductive material. The current collector includes a base having a first major surface, and a plurality of projections disposed on at least the first major surface of the base. The first major surface of the base is a planar surface. The porous layer is disposed on the first major surface of the base and is in direct contact with the first major surface. The projections are in direct contact with the porous layer in the interior of the porous layer.

A fuel cell includes: an electrolyte membrane; a cathode positioned on a first surface of the electrolyte membrane; an anode positioned on a second surface of the electrolyte membrane; a cathode-side sealant positioned on a surface of the cathode different from the electrolyte membrane side of the cathode; an anode-side sealant positioned on a surface of the anode different from the electrolyte membrane side of the anode; a cathode-side separator positioned on a surface of the cathode-side sealant different from the cathode side of the cathode-side sealant; and an anode-side separator positioned on a surface of the anode-side sealant different from the anode side of the anode-side sealant. The anode-side separator has a projection on a surface stacked on the anode-side sealant, or the cathode-side separator has a projection on a surface stacked on the cathode-side sealant.

Fuel cell

A gas diffusion layer for a fuel battery is used, which is configured by a porous member containing conductive particles, conductive fibers and a polymer resin as main components. An aggregate of the conductive fibers is formed inside the porous member, and an area ratio of the aggregate in any cross-section of the porous member is 0.5% or more and 8% or less. Further, a membrane electrode assembly including the gas diffusion layer for the fuel battery is used. Further, a fuel battery including the gas diffusion layer for the fuel battery is used.

A fuel cell includes a pair of separators for clamping a laminate including a membrane electrode assembly, an anode gas diffusion layer, and a cathode gas diffusion layer, and a frame formed from thermosetting resin and disposed between the separators to surround a periphery of the laminate. At least one of the anode and the cathode gas diffusion layers is formed from a composite of thermoplastic resin and conductive particles, and includes a protrusion protruding beyond a level of a surface of the frame which faces one of the separators in a state that the laminate is not clamped between the separators under a predetermined pressure. The one of the separators presses the protrusion and gets the one of the gas diffusion layers to be deformed and put into contact with the frame in a state that the laminate is clamped between the separators under the predetermined pressure.

Fuel cell and method for manufacturing fuel cell

A fuel cell includes: an electrolyte membrane; a fuel-side catalyst layer placed on one surface of the electrolyte membrane; an oxidant-side catalyst layer placed on another surface of the electrolyte membrane; a fuel-side gas-diffusion layer placed on a main surface of the fuel-side catalyst layer; an oxidant-side gas-diffusion layer placed on a main surface of the oxidant-side catalyst layer; a pair of separators that hold the fuel-side gas-diffusion layer and the oxidant-side gas-diffusion layer therebetween; a frame that surrounds outer peripheries of the fuel-side gas-diffusion layer and the oxidant-side gas diffusion layer; a fuel-side seal member placed on a main surface of the fuel-side gas-diffusion layer; and an oxidant-side seal member placed on a main surface of the oxidant-side gas-diffusion layer. In the fuel cell, no spaces are provided between the fuel-side gas-diffusion layer and the fuel-side catalyst layer and between the oxidant-side gas-diffusion layer and the oxidant-side catalyst layer.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells and production method thereof

Disclosed is a gas-diffusion layer used for fuel cells, including: a porous material that includes as main ingredients conductive particles and a polymer resin, wherein said gas-diffusion layer internally possesses pores with a size from 0.01 &#x3bc;m to 0.05 &#x3bc;m, and hollows with a size from 1 &#x3bc;m to 200 &#x3bc;m. Further disclosed is a process for producing a gas-diffusion layer used for fuel cells, including: (i) kneading conductive particles, a polymer resin, a pore-forming agent, a surfactant, and a dispersion solvent; (ii) rolling the mixture obtained in Step (i) to shape said mixture into a sheet; (iii) baking the sheet-shaped mixture to sublime the pore-forming agent, thereby forming hollows therein, and to remove the surfactant and the dispersion solvent; and (iv) further rolling the baked mixture to adjust a thickness of the baked mixture.

A fuel cell module includes an electrode membrane assembly and a pair of separators. The electrode membrane assembly includes an electrode portion and a pair of gas diffusion layers. The electrode portion includes a polymer electrolyte membrane, an anode electrode formed on a first surface of the polymer electrolyte membrane, and a cathode electrode formed on a second surface of the polymer electrolyte membrane. The separators sandwich the electrode membrane assembly from respective the anode surface and the cathode surface. An electrolyte membrane for solid polymer fuel cell includes a reinforce membrane made of nonwoven fibers and an electrolyte provided in a space among the nonwoven fibers. The nonwoven fibers have a non-uniform mass distribution in a plane of the electrolyte membrane. A mass of the nonwoven fibers per unit area in a region corresponding to at least part of a peripheral portion of a fuel cell-use gasket frame is greater than a mass of the nonwoven fibers per unit area in a region corresponding to a center portion of the gasket frame. The electrolyte membrane for solid polymer fuel cell is attached to the fuel cell-use gasket frame.
