A miniaturized, inexpensive instrument for measuring the mass flow rate of powder, which is capable of directly outputting the mass flow rate of powder and whose characteristics are not influenced by the kind and physical properties of the powder. The instrument can be easily manufactured, installed, operated, maintained, and color change can be easily done. A constant powder feeder, which is constructed based on this instrument and an electrostatic powder coating system utilizing this feeder has a high performance and a high operational efficiency. A measuring gas with a regulated flow rate is turned into a thin-layer of high-speed gas jets by a dispersion means, thereby powder is cross-dispersed and introduced into a measuring tube, the pressure difference generated therein is measured, and a feeding means is subject to feedback control so that the output of the pressure difference coincides with a set value.

A powder coating booth a function of supplying air though its ceiling. Sidewalls of the booth is formed from an insulating material or a semiconductor. A belt conveyor is disposed at the bottom of the booth. An electric field is formed so that it extends from a paint gun to the conveyor belt. The majority of oversprayed powder paint produced during painting becomes attached to the upper surface of a portion of the conveyor belt, is carried, together with this belt portion, to the outside of the booth, and is recovered from the conveyor by a blowing-type of static eliminator, thereby minimizing the mount of oversprayed powder paint mixed in an exhaust of the booth drawn through the sidewall.

An insulator layer is formed on an outer surface of a cylindrical metallic pipe, a masking wire material is wound in a spiral manner on the surface of the insulator layer and a heat-generating resistor is formed by spray coating heat-generating resistor material on the insulator and wire surfaces. Thereafter the wire material is removed to leave a groove at its trace, and thereby the above-mentioned heat-generating resistor can be formed in a spiral shape. A workpiece which may be made of a highly electrically insulating material is held in a spaced opposing relationship with respect to a silent discharge plate electrode to which an a.c. voltage is applied. A d.c. voltage is applied across the workpiece and the silent discharge plate electrode to form a driving electric field therebetween. Powder particles suspended in air are charged in the same polarity as that of the silent discharge plate electrode and then injected into the region between the silent discharge plate electrode and the workpiece where the electric field drives the charged particles toward the workpiece to coat it. This invention relates to a process for electrostatically coating a substantially axially symmetrical object with pulverized material, characterized by supporting said object maintained at a temperature below the melting point of said pulverized material in an electrostatic coating chamber having a substantially axially symmetrical shape and equipped with silent discharge plate electrodes on the inside of said chamber; feeding electrically charged pulverized material into said chamber; electrostatically coating said object with said pulverized material by the action of silent discharge from said electrodes; and removing surplus pulverized material from specific parts of said object by suction. This invention further relates to an apparatus used for electrostatically coating a substantially axially symmetrical object with pulverized synthetic resin, which comprises (i) an electrostatic coating chamber where said pulverized synthetic resin is coated on the surface of said object maintained at a temperature below the melting point of said resin; and (ii) a device for removing surplus pulverized resin from specific parts of said object by suction to electrostatically coat the desired parts only.
