A particle movement-type display apparatus is constituted by a pixel portion, a peripheral area around the pixel portion, and particles. At least a part of the peripheral area around the pixel portion is provided with a recess portion capable of accommodating a part of the particles therein.

Particle movement-type display apparatus

A reflective display apparatus that creates a display by moving particles includes a front substrate and a back substrate, a plurality of colored charged particles and an insulated liquid sandwiched between the front substrate and back substrate. A reflective first electrode and a second electrode are placed on the back substrate, and a support member is provided to keep a distance between the front substrate and the back substrate. A first portion of an area of the first electrode which borders on the second electrode is covered by a colored layer, which color is the same as the color of the charged particles.

Display apparatus

A system (apparatus and process) for producing an electrophoretic (display) device is provided for allowing production of such a device wherein electrophoretic particles in the dispersion liquid are easily and evenly distributed to respective cells (pixels) between two substrates of the device even in the case of a very small gap between the two substrates or the case of using a flexible substrate. The system includes a storage unit for a dispersion liquid containing the charged phoretic particles dispersed therein, a stiffer for stirring the dispersion liquid, a substrate-holder for holding the substrate in the dispersion liquid, and a voltage source for applying a voltage to the electrodes formed on the substrate thereby depositing the electrophoretic particles on the electrodes.

Apparatus and process for producing electrophoretic device

A movable particle display (such as an electrophoretic display) in which a plurality of closed spaces are two-dimensionally disposed along a surface of the substrate, a plurality of particles contained in each of the closed spaces, and a reflection surface for reflecting light which enters each of the closed particles are moved inside a closed space, between a position at which they cover a reflecting surface and a position at which they are collected to expose the reflecting surface. At least a part of the reflecting surface diffusely reflects incident light with an intensity distribution having directional properties (i.e. non-isotropically). The intensity of the diffusely reflected light has an angular distribution such that: (1) the amount of light reflected toward the position at which the particles are collected is smaller than in the case when the distribution of diffusely reflected light is isotropic, and (2) the amount of light reflected away from the position at which the particles are collected is larger than that of light reflected towards that position.

A particle-movement display device includes a front-side first substrate and a rear-side second substrate disposed opposite to each other with a spacing therebetween, a partition wall, disposed between the first and second substrates, for partitioning the spacing into a plurality of sections, and charged particles disposed in each of the sections. A first electrode is disposed on a surface of the first substrate in each section, and a second electrode is disposed on a surface of the second substrate in each section. The first electrode in each section has a lattice-like shape, a pitch of which is smaller than a pitch of the partition wall.

Particle movement-type display device and particle movement-type display apparatus

A particle movement type display device includes a plurality of pixels each of which is constituted by a first substrate and a second substrate disposed opposite to each other with a spacing therebetween, charged particles disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, a first electrode and a second electrode disposed in contact with the spacing. An image is displayed by moving the charged particles under application of an electric field between the first electrode and the second electrode. The first electrode is formed on the first substrate at a part of a portion corresponding to each pixel, and a non-electrode forming portion at which the first electrode is not formed is provided on the first substrate.

A display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate disposed opposite to each other, and a display medium including an insulating liquid and electrophoretic colored particles dispersed therein and disposed between the first and second substrates. A first electrode and a second electrode are provided for applying a voltage to the display medium so as to move the colored particles between the first and second electrodes to effect a display depending on a voltage applied to the first and second electrodes. The electrophoretic colored particles are distributed uniformly without localization by incorporating the display medium in a plurality of light-transmissive tubes, and disposing and fixing the plurality of tubes in intimate contact with each other between the first and second substrates.

Display device and process for production thereof

An electrophoretic display device including first and second substrates disposed with a predetermined spacing, a partition member disposed between the first and second substrates, a plurality of electrophoretic particles and an insulating liquid which are sealed up by the substrates and the partition member, and first and second electrodes disposed close to the insulating liquid, is produced through a production process comprising the following steps (A), (B), (C) and (D): (A) a step of filling the insulating liquid and the electrophoretic particles in a recess defined by the first substrate and the partition member, (B) a step of placing a first area of the second substrate to be in contact with the partition member in an uncured state and a second area of the second substrate to be in contact with the insulating liquid in a cured state, (C) a step of causing the first area of the second substrate to contact the partition member and the second area of the second substrate to contact the insulating liquid, and (D) a step of curing the first area of the second substrate contacting the partition member.

Process for producing electrophoretic display device

An electrophoretic display includes a first substrate disposed on a viewer side, a second substrate disposed at a predetermined spacing with the first substrate, a first electrode disposed on the first substrate side, a second electrode disposed on the second electrode side, liquid disposed at the predetermined spacing, and a plurality of charged particles dispersed in the liquid. The charged particles are movable by changing a polarity of a voltage applied between the first and second electrodes to effect display. The second electrode at a pixel has a surface area larger than that of the first electrode at the pixel.

Electrophoretic display

A system (apparatus and process) for producing an electrophoretic (display) device is provided for allowing production of such a device wherein electrophoretic particles in the dispersion liquid are easily and evenly distributed to respective cells (pixels) between two substrates of the device even in the case of a very small gap between the two substrates or the case of using a flexible substrate. An electrophoretic display device is configured to move charged particles between a display electrode surface and a cell wall surface and provides a solution to a problem that many charged particles are collected at the edge of the display electrode to degrade display contrast. The electrophoretic display device is arranged to move the charged particles between the display electrode surface and the side face of the cell wall and the vicinity thereof to implement display, and the second electrode is disposed on a lower face of the cell wall or in the vicinity of the lower face, thereby allowing the particles to be located on the surface of the cell wall. Another electrophoretic display device is provided which has a structure wherein all or part of the display electrode has a protruding shape.

Electrophoretic display device

The present invention relates to a configuration of a display element and forms switching circuits or peripheral circuits for driving pixels by transferring/disposing a semiconductor circuit formed on another substrate and disposes high performance transistors on the display substrate. The present invention also relates to a process of forming a circuit having switching elements for driving pixels and peripheral circuits for sending drive signals thereto on the substrate of the display element. A separation layer is formed on a second substrate and a semiconductor film is formed thereon. This semiconductor film having predetermined semiconductor circuits formed therein is bonded to the substrate of the display element and then electrical connection with a wire on the substrate is effected.

Display device and process of producing the same

An electrophoretic display device includes first and second substrates arranged in opposed relation to each other with a space, an insulating liquid arranged in the space and a plurality of colored and charged electrophoretic particles dispersed in the insulating liquid. On the basis of arrangement of a stage along the second substrate in the space between the substrates, a first surface opposing a thicker portion of the insulating liquid, a second surface opposing a thinner portion of the insulating liquid and a side wall of the stage, which connects the first surface to the second surface, are formed on the second substrate. A first electrode is arranged along the first surface, and a second electrode is arranged along the second surface. The display device has a third electrode arranged along at least a part of the side wall of the stage and forming an electrode face continuous with the first electrode.

An electrophoretic display device is provided with an improved display quality by distributing an electrophoretic liquid mixture containing electrophoretic particles to respective pixels in substantially equal amounts, thereby obviating a display density fluctuation due to a difference in distributed amount of the electrophoretic particles at the respective pixels. The equal distribution is performed through a process including the use of a temporary adsorbing member carrying the electrophoretic particles in an electrostatically adsorbed form in a pattern corresponding to an arrangement pattern, followed by transfer of the electrophoretic particles to the respective pixels, or a process including distribution of a distribution liquid containing the electrophoretic particles to the respective pixels followed by a step of adding the dispersion liquid.
