A batting practice trainer includes a laser oscillator placed in a sensor unit configured to resemble a home plate. Three beams are emitted from the sensor unit in a predetermined pattern, so that the height, speed, and angle of elevation of a swinging bat may be calculated from the passage of the bat across the beams. This is accomplished without interferring with the batters' swing or substantially modifying the bat.

A hologram scanner includes a rotatable hologram disk on which a plurality of hologram lenses are arranged circumferentially, and a light beam guide mechanism for successively shifting irradiation regions in a predetermined direction with respect to the direction of rotation of the hologram disk, to apply a light beam successively to the hologram lenses on the hologram disk, so that the scanning of a reading window with the light beam is effected in all directions with high density. The hologram scanner is employable as a bar code reading device in a POS or UPC system.

A television camera for picking up a bar coded label is controlled to produce scanning lines contacting each other as by halving its vertical sync frequency, producing an elliptical beam, alternating narrow beams with wide beam, or utilizing wobbling technique. Also a raster formed of the scanning lines is stepwise rotated by a pulse motor. Alternatively a pair of horizontal and vertical deflection coils disposed in quadrature relationship with the other pair of similar coils are supplied with sawtoothed deflection currents varying in amplitude at predetermined equal intervals and in quadrature relationship with similar current supplied to the other coil pair. For spaced scanning lines, a video signal from the television camera affected by its after-images is blocked by a gate. Alternatively, the signal is subtracted from a video signal due to the preceding scanning line correlative to the same to remove the effect of the after-images.

A branching filter for branching two microwaves from waves having two microwaves and a plurality of milliwaves includes two groups of coupling holes fluidically connected to one or more band-pass filters and a branching waveguide, one group of coupling holes being arranged on the wall of the conical horn so as to be equiangularly disposed thereabout with a 90.degree. interval defined between adjacent coupling holes when, for example, four coupling holes, filters, and waveguides are employed in such group, while the second group of coupling holes, disposed axially downstream of the first group of holes by means of a predetermined distance, is similarly disposed about the horn although angularly offset with respect to the holes of the first group through means of an angle of 45.degree..

Branching filter

A data reading apparatus includes a TV camera with a deflecting mechanism for reading codified data. The scanning direction of the TV camera is rotated by using the deflecting mechanism.
