A protection device comprises a first planar substrate, a second planar substrate, a heating element and a fusible element. The second planar substrate is attached to the underside of the first planar substrate to form a composite structure. The heating element comprises an insulating layer and a heating layer disposed thereon. The heating element is disposed on the first planar substrate, and the insulating layer is disposed between the first planar substrate and the heating layer. The fusible element is disposed above the heating element. The heating element heats up to blow the fusible element in the event of over-voltage or over-temperature.

Protection device and circuit protection apparatus containing the same

A protection device comprises a first planar substrate, a second planar substrate, a heating element, a fusible element and an absorbent element. The first substrate comprises a first surface, and the second substrate comprises a second surface facing the first surface. The heating element is disposed on the first surface, and the fusible element is disposed above the heating element. The absorbent element is disposed on the second surface and above the fusible element. When over-current or over-temperature occurs, the heating element heats up to melt and blow the fusible element and the absorbent element absorbs melted metal of the fusible element.

A reflowable thermal fuse comprises a conduction element with first and second elastic portions, a sensor, a restraining element, a heating element and mounting pads. The first elastic portion is adapted to apply force on the conduction element in an activated state of the thermal fuse. The sensor is in mechanical communication with the first elastic portion of the conduction element. The restraining element is adapted to secure the second elastic portion of the conduction element and thereby prevent the second elastic portion from applying force on the conduction element in an installation state of the thermal fuse. Application of an activating current through the heating element causes heat generated and transferred to the restraining element and makes the restraining element to lose resilience, thereby releasing the second elastic portion and placing the thermal fuse in the activated state. The sensor loses its ability to hold the first elastic portion in place and allows the conduction element to open during a subsequent fault condition.

Reflowable thermal fuse

A surface-mountable over-current protection device comprises at least one chip, a first lead and a second lead. The chip comprises a PTC material layer and two metal electrode layers disposed on upper and lower surfaces of the PTC material layer. The first lead is bent into multiple portions comprising a first electrode connecting portion connecting to one of the two metal electrode layers of the at least one chip and a first soldering portion for surface-mounting. The second lead is bent into multiple portions comprising a second electrode connecting portion connecting to another one of the two electrode layers of the at least one chip and a second soldering portion for surface-mounting. The PTC material layer comprises crystalline polymer and conductive filler dispersed therein, and the conductive filler has a resistivity less than 500&#x3bc;&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm. The surface-mountable over-current protection device can withstand a cycle life test of 300 cycles at 20V/40A without blowout.

Surface-mountable over-current protection device

An over-current protection device comprises a PTC device and a heating element operable to heat the PTC device. The PTC device contains crystalline polymer and metal or ceramic conductive filler dispersed therein. The PTC device has a resistivity less than 0.1 &#x3a9;&#xb7;cm. The over-current protection device has the relation: It (heating)&#x3c;Ih (60&#xb0; C.)&#xd7;10%, where Ih (60&#xb0; C.) is a hold current of the over-current protection device at 60&#xb0; C. when the heating element is not activated; It (heating) is a trip current of the over-current protection device when the heating element is activated to heat the PTC device. The PTC device has high hold current, thereby allowing a battery containing the device can be fast charged with a large current. In a specific situation, the heating element heats the PTC device to decrease the hold current of the over-current protection device of low resistivity, and accordingly the PTC device can trip by a small current.

Over-current protection device

A protection device comprises a first substrate, a second substrate, a fusible element and a heating element. The first substrate comprises a first surface, and the second substrate comprises a second surface facing the first surface. The fusible element is disposed on the first surface of the first substrate, and the heating element is disposed on the second surface of the second substrate and is disposed above the fusible element. When over-voltage or over-temperature occurs, the heating element heats up to blow the fusible element and thereby providing over-voltage and over-temperature protection.

An over-current protection device comprises a PTC device and a first external lead. The PTC device comprises first and second conductive layers and a PTC material layer laminated therebetween. The first conductive layer forms an upper surface of the PTC device. The first external lead has a lower surface soldered to the first conductive layer. The lower surface is provided with a plurality of protrusions of which tops are in direct contact with the first conductive layer to form a gap between the first external lead and the first conductive layer. Solder paste fills the gap to form an electrically conductive connecting layer. The over-current protection device may further comprise a second external lead with protrusions soldered to the second conductive layer to form an axial-lead or a radial-lead type device.

Over-current protection device and protective circuit module containing the same

A thermistor includes a first electrically conductive member, a second electrically conductive member and a polymer material layer laminated therebetween. The polymer material layer exhibits positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior, and includes at least one crystalline polymer and at least one electrically conductive filler distributed in the crystalline polymer. The conductive filler has a resistivity less than 500 &#x3bc;&#x3a9;-cm and includes 72-96% by weight of the polymer material layer. The thermistor has a device effective area, and the value of the hold current at 60&#xb0; C. divided by the device effective area is around 0.16-0.8 A/mm. The ratio of the hold current of the thermistor at 60&#xb0; C. to the hold current at 25&#xb0; C. of the thermistor is 40-95%.
